Can anyone help me on what tools to use to shape and decorate bone, please?

So far I shaped the bird for my courting flute with a metal saw and sanding paper. It's very difficult to get the detailed work done properly though. A little machinery helped me out but I 'd like to stick to the handcrafts.

Decoration is also an issue. Could be with colours - kind of scrimshaw - or cut design. I am struggling with the problem that bone is indeed as hard as bone. So any suggestions would be welcome.
