i am new to the group, but may be able to help you with this one.
i have a beautiful necklace of purple corn beads and always wondered how they were made. recently i was in a store that had some for sale, and i took the time to really LOOK at them. i don't know how they are colored, but i figured out how they are strung.
what had been done was this...the corn was allowed to sprout...but just barely. this leaves the kernel intact, but makes a soft spot in the center for stringing....then the sprout was pushed out...i'm guessing with a needle as they are strung.
