For the Elders, I am learning the Choctaw language because in a prayer session, I was told that although it is not an issue with the One, in which language we use, when it comes to calling upon the spirit helpers, it is a good and proper thing to address them in our 'native' languages. And that this is especially true during ceremony. So I have two questions. Is it a correct teaching that the spirits will respond to their original language, where they might not if it is in English? Does such a teaching assume that distance plays a part? By this I mean, our ancestors were removed from our original territories. Would it be correct that certain spirits would not have moved with the people (i.e. the trail where we cried)? Yakoke (thank you) May we always walk well. |

I have always believed that we should pray to the great Spirit in whatever language you prefer as they are always heard . My ancestors were on the trail ...and they are Cherokee but it doesnt matter what tribe your people are, Creator hears in all languages. Good question...thanks |

siyo Funny thing about praying to spirits, they understand all languages and they understand that maybe u cant use the old languages but it doesnt effect if they will answer your prayers. as far as them not moving with us, they are always with us no matter where we go, yes it would be nice to pray at the old sites but we cant always reach those sites, the thing for u to do is to make a new prayer site where u are, make a prayer circle, cleanse it with sage and prayers and keep it scared and the spirits will come. |

Now, these are really interesting questions. Thank you Two Oaks for asking. Being born in Italy one could think I pray in Italian. Well, I used to, as a kid. But when I grew older I started using English for everything that has a deeper meaning for me. Anything about feelings or prayer comes more natural to me in English. And now I'm trying to learn the Cherokee language. Then, I also asked myself the same questions you asked and the answer I found was that we can also pray without a tangible message. We can use words, both saying them out loud or keeping them in our heart. But maybe we can simply use our heart. Languages are meant to let us communicate among each others, but the Creator can reach our hearts no matter what language we use. Thank you Annie for your words and Greywolf for the interesting suggestion. With much Respect, sara

Thank you all for these beautiful posts. I kind of feel the same way Sara - Faithful Stranger does. Sometimes I even feel that joy is the most beautiful thank you prayer you can offer our Creator and sorrow is the most heartfelt request for help and comfort when it is experienced in full awareness of the presence of our Creator. I am not an elder but this is my experience of how life can be a prayer. Walk in beauty. Zuni |
