Dear Elders, I have a question, if I may please. At the end of the Smudging ceremony during last Friday's chat, Golden Eagle concluded with the word "AHO." What does "aho" mean in this context? It is often used at the end of ceremonies? Thank you for your teachings, dear Elders. Respectfully, Mary |

Aho" is Lakota and has been borrowed into many other tribal languages as a result of hearing the word at pow-wows in the 20th century. "Aho" means "yes, I agree". It is used in prayers in somewhat the same way that "amen" is used (" as amen" means "I agree"), but it is not used exclusively in prayers. hugs Annie |

Wado, Elder Annie, for your kindness in answering my questions and for the opportunity you provide for us to learn the "old ways." With gratitude and respect, Mary |
