Evening Sun walks from one village to the next.

Along the ancient path.

That her ancestors walked many times before.

Evening Sun came upon a feather. 

An eagle's feather she did find.

 

Walking the path her ancestors did before.

She carried the feather gently to her grandfather's hut.

Grandfather! Grandfather!

Evening Sun shouted to her grandfather.

I found an eagle's feather, Grandfather!

Grandfather explained to Evening Sun.

 

That she has been blessed by The Eagle Spirit.

He has especially dropped it for you to find.

Because, My Granddaughter, he has chosen you to be his wife.

 

It is a great honor that you have been chosen.

Says Grandfather.

She asked her Grandfather; "Why me?"

And he explained it to her.

"Because you are a kind and gentle person.

You help your people in times of need.

The other elders in the tribe saw this and they

prayed to The Great Eagle Spirit.

In your honor.

 

You are kind to small creatures when they need help.

So the mighty Eagle Spirit saw this as well.

And he heard the prayers of the elders and

wanted to leave you a gift.

So he left his feather for you to find.

My granddaughter

the Eagle Spirit wants you to be his bride!

 

We must get ready for your wedding.

For the Eagle Spirit will be here in a few days.

Everything must be ready for his arrival.

Run home and tell the others that I have said

that the Eagle Spirit will be here in a few days!

 

She did what her Grandfather told her.

And in a few days Eagle Spirit rode into the village.

On a beautiful light brown female deer!

 

And as he flew from the deer's back

he changed into a man.

"I am Eagle Spirit and I have come to marry my

chosen one, Evening Sun!"

 

Grandfather led Evening Sun to Eagle Spirit.

"And I am the one they call wise One.

This is my Granddaughter that you

have chosen, Evening Sun."

 

Eagle Spirit explained to Wise One.

"I remember you very well." Said Eagle Spirit.

"When I was a young eagle just learning to fly

I fell from my mother's nest and landed on the

ground and broke one of my wings."

 

"You were sitting under the tree in meditation

when I landed next to you.

You picked me up and took me back to the village

where you fixed my broken wing.

I saw this specialness in your granddaughter as well.

Along with the prayers that the elders sent to me."

 

"That is why nothing has happened to your people.

That is why I come to marry Evening Sun for our

ties will be stronger.

This is my promise to you, Wise One."

That evening they were married.

Eagle Spirit and Evening Sun stayed in the village

for a little while

 

When it was time to go

they rode away on the back of the doe.

Not as humans, but as eagles!

 

They live high in the mountains now.

Every once and a while you can see them soaring

high over the village where Evening Sun was born.

Her home is now the sky flying high everyday with

Eagle Spirit.

 

Evening Sun's family is known as the Eagle Clan now.

And wise One, Evening Sun's Grandfather, still lives

till this day as the Spirit of the Coyote.

So when you here the sound of the coyote or see

one in the fields

Or around a water hole, just think of Wise One in the story
