As part of the ongoing development of the Leonard Peltier Defense Offense Committee, and with much pleasure, Leonard and I would like to announce that Ben Carnes (Choctaw) will serve in the official capacity of Interim National Branch Support Group Coordinator, along with his other responsibilities within the Committee.
Ben has been involved in the Peltier case as one of the National Spokespersons since 1991. He was one of the coordinators for the Leonard Peltier Freedom Month campaign in Washington, D.C. in November 1999. Throughout the years he has participated and organized protests, demonstration and events on Peltier's case. It is his experience and knowledge of the case that he brings will help to further Leonard's cause.
Coincidentally, Leonard and Ben share a distinction that stands in a category in itself. Both men have been presented with human rights awards, while they were still incarcerated. Leonard received his 1986 award from the country of Spain, while the Oklahoma Human Rights Commission nominated Ben in 1987.
He has also testified before congressional committees in support of Native rights, served as a Spiritual Advisor to state and federal prisoners and a recognized writer and speaker.
We would ask our friends and supporters to welcome Ben to our staff and support his efforts to build a powerful network of support groups.
