Hello everyone. I'm Kriss and I currently live in NYC. I'm originally from southwestern VA. I traced my ancestory back on my mother's side to the first immmigrant from England in the early 1700s and he married a Cherokee woman. I have always had a strong tie to the Cherokee people and have tried to learn as much as I can about them. My family used to travel to the reservation every year for a week - it was their way of introducing that part of our heritage to my brother and me.
I am currently working as a teacher in a high school special ed program. I teach culture and ethics. I have made a big effort to make the kids understand the native cultures and have tried to learn as much about the other tribes as I know about the Cherokee.
I was given the name Fire Mouse many years ago. There's a long story behind it, but I basically had been nicknamed mouse for a while and used to be a firefighter. I once had a Cherokee elder tell me I reminded him of a Cherokee legend of the singing fire mouse. Since then I have been known as Fire Mouse.
I am married and have twin boys. They will be three in April. It is my goal to raise them to respect their heritage - native and English. It is also my goal to find a way to help my native people in their current struggles - and pass that care and understanding onto my boys and their children.
I hope this gives you a better idea of who I am and why I am here. Thanks for reading!
