I was on my way up the mountain to the lake where I was to meet my friends when I noticed the turn out I had passed many times before. I had alway been curious about it but had never stopped. The car wasn't over heated yet (my Model A Ford did that on occasion) so I thought why not give it a rest and satisfy my curiousity.
I walked over to the canyon rim and sat down. Below was a pine forest that spread out to my right and peaked to my left. There were no other trees among the pines. Pine trees are jealous of their territory.
I was sitting on the canyon rim looking down into the pine forest when I first noticed her. She entered the canyon hesitantly, touching a few of the pines and moving slowly on into the dense forest. Some of the pines in this canyon were very old. A red tailed hawk circled overhead riding the updrafts caused by the warming sun, probably looking for lunch.
As she touched each pine she gave it voice. I could hear them starting to murmur then talk to each other. Moving a little faster she crisscrossed the canyon touching and caressing more and more trees. I could hear moans about troubles encountered and quick recitations about what happened last night. Little cliques or groups were formed with the older pines banding together and the younger ones all talking at once. Then the groups called to each other seeking knowledge of friends and relatives.
There were tales of past deeds both heroic and sad. There were stories of deceit and falsity, of hope and loyalty. The younger pines related stories of expectations and hopes.
As she worked her way toward the apex of the canyon She would hesitate now and then and choose a new direction. I knew she was aware of me, and of the hawk. When she reached the end of the canyon she moved up to rim level and slowly, carefully came toward me. I didn't move.
When she was next to me she reached out and touched me. That's when I felt the caress of the warm South Wind.
