Hi All, I am new to this site. I love all of the sharing and warm fuzzy feeling you get when you surf around here. The energy of the Great Spirit is strong. I am an alcoholic and addicted to prescription pain medicine. I grew up in an alcoholic family and started drinking when I was about 10. My life has been a roller coaster ride of trying to 'beat the beast' by myself. I always told myself I was strong enough to quit on my own. Yeah right..... Everytime I would quit, I would come back to a crash bigger and stronger than the last. I ended up losing very good paying jobs, my home, my self respect, everything..... My life had become totally unmanageable. FINALLY at the age of 50, I checked myself into the Emergency Room for alcohol and prescription medications. I KNEW I needed help and was on a road to death if I didn't reach out. From the emergency room, I was transfered to the detox unit where I spent the next week. When I walked into that detox room I felt such a welcome feeling of defeat. Ok.... I give up... my life is unmanageable... I need help. The nurses helped me understand why I drink which was what I was looking for all of my life..... why do I do this to myself? Many of these questions were answered for me. I haven't had a drink since I left detox (4 weeks ago) and am now working on the 12-steps. I go to live meetings (have a cool one tomorrow night) but I want to meet some others in recovery who have the same belief system I do. I have always felt very connected with the Great Spirit and am fascinated by the Native American ways. I have been using my medicine wheel to help guide me with my recovery and find much peace and understanding everytime I walk the wheel. Does anyone want to get into discussions along these lines? Would love to share and learn, Rose |

Hi Rose! We are so glad you joined us. What a hard time you have had. I hope you find many friends on this site that will become fast friends. There is much prayer for each other and encouragement as well. Try to join us in chat tonight if you can. We get a bit silly sometimes, and banter a bit, but do have fun. It's a great way to get to know us. Jump on in! Walk in peace this day my sister. Mira |

Hi, Rose my name is Rick I am the member that runs recovery chats when I can get off work and post it in advance. Most times it is in the morning or early after noon, I try to post on main board about 24 hours in advance. I'm an Alcoholic and addict to, I drank and drugged for 22 years ,Befor Creator led me to A.A. I have been clean and sober since 10/22/1995. I live in central Pennsylvania so when I post a time for recovery chats it is in eastern time,I hope to have one next week on the 15th or 16th of September. I have no Indian blood but I believe with all my heart Creator has called me to this path,I have been learning Native American Spirituality since 1998 and have started learning Cherokee ways since Jan. of this year. I have a sponser and home group and still attend live meetings when I can,I have done all the steps more than once. Remember we only have to stay clean and sober 24 hours at a time, when I first learned this many years ago it really helped get clean. I just could not think about never drinking again, but I could , not drink just for today, with respect Rick. P.S. you can respond to this right here in the recovery room if you like. |

Thanks for the welcome all! It sounds like you stay very busy, Rick. I don't have any Indian blood either, but have felt a very strong connection with Native American Spirituality since I was a child. On the medicine wheel, I am a Raven in the Butterfly clan and my spiritual spot is the Black Hills of South Dakota. I feel 'at home' in the Hill City to Deerfield lake area. I visit at least once a year just to get myself grounded. That is where I went the second week of my sobriety to celebrate my new life, with out alcohol; with Great Spirit. I believe I was sent down this alcoholic road to learn the lessons needed to help others break this terrible cycle. When I had stopped drinking years ago, I had thoughts of using my knowledge of public speaking to help reach alcoholics. Fear put my nose back in the bottle and I also had not hit rock bottom. Thus, I wasn't ready yet. I pray many times a day for direction. I'm sure I will be shown the right way to serve others as I make my way through my own recovery. Again, very nice to meet you all!! |

Siyo Rose, I am a new member to the group. I plan to work with Rick Nightowl in the Recovery Room Chat. Maybe you can help me with the twelve step program so I can better help the "People" who need it. I don't know why I am compelled to tell you this but I am more Spiritual than I am Religous as I was forced to be when growing up. I think all I got out of church was a false positive feeling. But when I go to the water or go to the forest to pray I feel right at home with Creator there with me every moment of my life. Just 'more' some times than 'others'. When I need help I go to a special place where I can be alone. And I'll sit there for awhile just listening to my surroundings, the sound of my Spirit. At one with Nature. There is peace among the tall trees. I've had to take Oxycodone for about seven years now for my lower back. D.D.D. Degenerative Disc Desease in L-3 & L-4 of my spine It's a slow process. Hopefully I won't have to have surgery. The pain pills are only 5mg. I try not to take too many. plus head on collision 03/10/08 by drunk driver. Anyway, I will be looking forward to seeing you in the Recovery chat room soon. I've been working with Rick trying to get something going. We will keep everyone informed of a date on the message board. . Not sure yet. Wado, Eagle Heart. to hi du (Good peace) as in a state of body, mind,&spirit. |

Hi Eagle Heart, Thanks for the welcome. I am sorry it took me so long to reply. I have had some things going on, but will be a regular here from now on. Yes, I totally know what you are talking about as far as spiritual vs religion. I have always felt the same way. I love being out in nature, enjoying the stillness, peace and spiritual connection. I remember my Mother taking us to church all of the time when I was young (about knee high). I remember she and I were standing outside one day, it was a beautiful day; and she was calling me in to dress for church. I said, "Mom, why do we have to go to a 'house' to talk to God? This is his house right here". I said this as I had my hand over my heart, looking up at the trees and blue sky. This is one of the best memories of my childhood, as the spiritual connection was very strong. . The 12 step program is wonderful. God/Creator has kept me sober for 77 days and I am working the program with a sponsor. Small world, I have degenerative discs too... I will be more than happy to help with the 12 steps. Let me know what I can do. Rose |
