I have been working with childern ages 13 years to early twentys with substance abuse as well as mental health problems for more then ten years. Being an older man it sometimes is frustrating, they can be so resistant.(like we wern't)But I think back to the time when I thought I had it all figured out then remind my self this is about planting a seed. The hope is they return to the rooms of recovery while there still young and have wonderful long clean and sober lives. It is proven that if a child is exposed to recovery at a younger age lets say 15 by the time he is 18 or 19 he comes back and stays clean rather then his first experiance at the age of 30 or older. This is not to discourage those of us that got here latter in life this is just a meassage to be patient with the young ones. I have also found many times they just need some one to hear them rather then tell them. I have worked with some that you might think since they have suffered abuse of the worst kind they may never be whole again, however it continues to amazes me what just listining loving and a little guided direction can acomplish. So know matter what the age differance is, we have all walked down that road with the holes in it maybe more then once in our lives and that will always be know matter the age diffarence an experiance we all share....Remember the kids ......Dadcat |
