The Great Spirit gave the gift of flight to the winged ones for he favored them most and wanted them closest to him.
Birds feathers, obtained in the proper manner, are used by Native Americans to help guide the smoke from smudges tof tobacco, sage, cedar and sweetgrass to the Great Spirit. This smoke represents the prayers of the people.
