On this day in 1847, the Choctaw Nation sent 710 dollars to the starving people of Ireland. It was the height of the potato famine in that country. Tribal council representatives sent the money after 600 Irish people died one night while crossing the Mayo Mountains in search of food. The Choctaws identified the tragedy as similar to the “Trail of Tears.�?
