Reality Check: Buyer Beware: Voters Denied Full Knowledge of Alliance-Conservative Views

The Issue:

In a score of ridings across Canada, Alliance-Conservative candidates have refused to participate in all-candidate debates, have refused media interviews or have been silenced by the national campaign.

Reality Check:

Voters in the following ridings were denied the right to question their local candidates:

1. Abbotsford ?Randy White misses environmental debate with David Anderson.

2. Kootenay-Columbia ?Jim Abbott, Conservative culture critic, refuses to discuss cultural issues with national media.

3. Edmonton Spruce Grove ?Rona Ambrose misses forum on the Enoch Reserve and did not participate in forum organized by the Regional Chief for the Assembly of First Nations.

4. Edmonton-Sherwood Park ?Ken Epp is a no-show at debate organized by high school students after confirming his attendance the night before.

5. Edmonton East ?Peter Goldring misses three forums: the Small Press Association debate, one organized by a local high school students union, and a third organized by the Bissell Street drop-in and support centre.

6. Calgary South Centre ?Lee Richardson is a no-show at all debates, except for one with previously available questions.

7. Calgary ?Conservative candidates fail to join debate hosted by city’s ethnic communities, June 20.

8. Calgary West ?Rob Anders is a no-show at public meeting on hate propaganda law.

9. Wild Rose ?Myron Thompson is a no-show at public meeting on hate propaganda law.

10. Kildonan-St. Paul ?Joy Smith misses debate on women’s issues.

11. Dauphin-Swan Lake ?Inky Mark misses four local debates on riding issues.

12. Winnipeg Centre ?Robert Eng misses CBC Radio all-candidates?debate.

13. Essex ?Jeff Watson doesn’t participate in all-candidates debate, June 16.

14. Elgin-Middlesex-London ?Joseph Preston doesn’t participate in all-candidates debate, June 14.

15. London-Fanshawe ?John Mazzilli doesn’t participate in all-candidates debate.

16. Newmarket-Aurora ?Belinda Stronach misses debate, June 14.

17. London North Centre ?Tim Gatten misses two all-candidate debates.

18. Parkdale High Park ?Candidate Jurij Klufas no longer participates in any public events after missing June 14 debate.

19. Etobicoke North ?Candidate Rupinder Nannar misses all candidates?debate organized by the Coalition of Muslim Organizations. No Conservative candidate participates.

20. London West ?Michael Menear misses all-candidate debates.

21. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke ?Cheryl Gallant refuses all requests, misses at least six previously scheduled events.

22. Fredericton ?Kent Fox has misses a number of campaign debates.

23. Charlottetown ?Darren Peters is a no-show at debate on health care.

24. St. John’s South ?Loyola Hearn refuses at least two debate requests and refuses media interviews.

25. Nunuvat ?Duncan Cunningham misses health care debate in Iqaluit.

Under a Conservative Party policy, candidates were forced to sign an agreement forbidding them from criticizing the leader or the campaign. The party also silenced several candidates ?Cheryl Gallant, Scott Reid, Art Hanger, Myron Thompson, and others ?to ensure their points of view were not shared with voters again during the campaign.

Canadians should remember to “beware?when they vote on Monday ?who knows what the Conservative Party of Canada really represents.
