yup, it's me again. sitting here trying NOT to stew....and feel stupid. i just came upon some of the rheumatologists;' notes that were sent to my ex internist and she has said she doesn't think my "problems" should be treated with pharmeceuticals! oh my god, am i INSANE and i don't know it yet???? she says my "problems" are "all soft tissue related"...okee dokee, but...how come after twenty years of this treatment and that treatment i finally felt like i got some lasting relief from...pain medication?

this has got me to wondering if any of you would be willing to share with me what the nature of your chronic pain issues are?.....i am just trying like crazy to get my bearings back here.....since when does "just fibromyalgia"(the brushoff from the ex internist)of "just soft tissue pain" mean no pain medication as part of treatment? i feel like i am quickly sinking here.....seriously.....THIS is why pain patients kill themselves: nobody on their side , so to speak. how easy it is for THEM to blithely say "oh, she doesn't need pain medication...it's JUST THIS/it's JUST THAT"

why is there no one in my life who is on my side?

They hand me all kinds of pain prescriptions.  I am the one that is very careful about them.

That dr is a quack, and that is my professional opinion.

There are still too many doctors that think fibromyalgia is a catchall term for pain of undetermined origin, meaning they don't have a clue what's causing it. That doesn't make it any less real! The fact that so many people get significant relief from pain medication should make them realize that there IS something causing that pain. In my opinion, anyone suffering for years from untreated pain would be a fool NOT to be depressed, so any doctor who says "You're depressed" is blithely stating the obvious. Well, yeah, doc, you would be, too, if you were in our shoes! A lot of people are getting significant relief from Lyrica for treatment of fibromyalgia now; I don't know if you've tried it or not, but it's worth asking your new internist if she can give you some samples to try since some similar medications had a bad effect on you. There's not much point in filling an expensive prescription until you know it's going to help.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of doctors who just don't want to prescribe narcotics UNLESS you have something broken, a deformity they can see, etc.  Many doctors consider fibro a "garbage can term"; at least they did a few years ago....fortunately they've changed their minds, thank goodness.

But the thing is you have PAIN....and if nothing else relieves the pain for you, why can't you take narcotics??  Did you tell this doctor that the pain meds are the only way you get any relief??  Sometimes they just don't hear us.  You can ask this doctor how are you supposed to do the 'normal things in your day when you are in too much pain'...and that you 'want the least amount of pain meds to help you get through a day'.  Hopefully, the doc will "get it".

Good luck and hope that you can get it through to this rheumy about what you need and why  you need it.  Hang in there!
Hugz,
Dee

thank you all, i really apreciate your words of advice.

i have just now CRAWLED out of bed. i slept late because i am still battling this virus but the pain in my lumbar spine and SI joints is so incredibly bad , has been growing since the last chiropractic treatment, that i just started to cry as i sat up in bed....it took five minutes of deep breathing and mild stretching to even be able to THINK about m oving. the pain is a ten......i just took pain meds. ANYONE who tries to take this means of relief away from me....well, i'll bite ''\em ...hard...on the ankles!!!!! lol this IS the only thing that helps at this point. i see my new doctor tomorrow. in a way i am sort of glad i am in high pain...so i can be very very CLEAR about how much pain i am in. oh, i ALSO see the rheumy tomorrowo morning, for DEXA scan and appt. i will tell HER too......

Once again, Kalia.  Don't tell her.  Show her.  Take a pain diary with you, even if you have to sit down and make it up from memory.

Microsoft Excell is excellent for keeping a pain diary.  Also it's great for graphing it.

If a doctor has something they can put in the chart that documents your pain levels, they're much more likely to give you narcotics.  But if you go in there demanding narcotics, the chances of you getting them are very slim.  Show the doctor your pain levels.  Then let the doctor decide what needs to be done.  If they don't give you narcotics, say that's fine.  Go home and document an increase in your pain levels and come back in a few days and show her that what she gave you isn't working.  Your pain got worse.  Let the doctor make the decision you need narcotics.  Be reluctant to take them.  Ask if there's not something else.

Believe me when I say that if you follow this protocol, you'll be much more successfull in getting the pain medication you need.  Demanding narcotics makes a doctor suspicious.  Drug seekers do that.  We who are in pain just want the pain to go away, what ever that takes.

Yes, it's a bit manipulative.  And if the DEA weren't beating on our doctors it wouldn't be necessary.  The fact is, though, that the DEA is beating on our doctors and making them proove that there's a need for prescribing narcotics.  So we have to help them do that.

Hugs and lots of love,

Dan
