OK that was hard. I have pilates for wieght loss. I first watched the dvd and I knew some of the positions would be hard but HOLY CRAP....You can feel it right off the bat. I think I might need alot of encouragement to keep doing this one. I can definatly see how it will show results right away. I might have to hook up my vhs and start back with dear old richard simmons again and do that 2 times a week and do the pilates 2 times a week just until I get used to exercising again. By no means am I trying to discourage anyone from doing pilates just make sure when you start you follow the modified person. Well wish me luck!!!!!!

I love Pilates! I do a tape and i do a class once a week. The one  tape i have is Pilates for Dummys. I do say that taking a class really teaches you alot about your breathing and that is what is important.

Well - I was at the store today and I got "Pilates for Dummies". I have not tried it - I am only at the watching stage. It's suggested you watch it once thru first before trying it. So - I watched it for 20 mins. while I cycled. It's very interesting! (This tape is for 40 mins.)

I have not given a lot of thought when I would incorporate it. I don't know if this is something that stands alone or if you do it before or after something else. I guess I will have to see.

Thanks for sharing with me about Pilates.
Hugs,
angelbear

I tried my Pilates tape yesterday morning. I am a little sore this morning, but just a little. It looks easier than it is. I did everything I could. What I liked the most about this tape was that it gives you three different ways to do a lot of the exercises - basic (my kind), regular and challenged.  The breathing is different and I need to practice that. I plan to try it again on Thursday.

Stick with the Pilates it is great.  Start off slowly and work youself up to more of the exercises.  It is not the quantity that you do but the quality.  The quantity will follow.

At the beginning of the year I started going to physio at our local hospital and the physios had just been to a workshop for Palates for those of us who have osteoporosis.  I have found them absolutley marvelous.  I have not lost much weight but I now feel much healthier and my mucles are now firm.  I also go to 3 other exercise groups each week. I can not do all the exercises with the other groups because of the osteoporosis in my spine but I but all my effort into it.

I have never thought of using a pedometer before.  Must look into getting one.

Wendles - thank you for responding to this thread.

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis last year, but I have a problem with the meds for it.  My doc has me taking calcium in the am and the pm. My doc is concerned about me breaking a hip - I'm tired of breaking fingers and toes! Exercise is supposed to help build bones. (It is a really big contributor to keeping my bg's down!)

I've been trying to do the pilates tape once a week. I LOVE that you are doing these exercises!

I would say having a pedometer has helped me - it really makes me look at how much I move. If you can - please get one. I think it really helps. And when you do - please post your numbers on the pedometer thread.

Hugs,
angelbear

I HAVE to start doing some exercises and read your posts on Pilates.  Are the tapes available anywhere and what would you recommend?  I'm totally out of shape and need to lose at least 15 pounds but hate to exercise!!!  So all you Pilates exercisers, could you tell me how to get going with it.  thanks

Pumper - I got Pilates for Dummies tape at Walmart . Because of someone's post here. (It was under $9 and $4 cheaper there than Pilates for Dummies at the Best Buy here.) I knew nothing about pilates. There are a LOT of pilates tapes out there. They seem to sell them all over the place. I also looked at them at Barns and Noble. (I also looked at the Pilates for Dummies Book at Barns and Noble, but it didn't seem to be the same as the tape.)  I don't know which is the best, but I wanted to start somewhere. This is still something that is a very big challenage for me.

It looks easy, but it's not. You do get a workout. But it's totally different than anything I've done before, yet simular. If that makes any sense.  I like it because it changes things around in my routine. I don't feel like I've been any help.

Good luck.
Please post what you get and how's it going.
Hugs,
angelbear

Pumper, I've not done any of the Pilates exercises...not yet anyway....but I can tell you this, choose an exercise routine that you'll enjoy or you won't stick with it...walking, running, swimming, dancing...whatever you enjoy and yes, if you think you'll enjoy pilates, by all means buy a tape and try it....but remember, any movement is exercise...and remember what you do today is not what you have to do tomorrow...the more you change your routine, the more fun it will be..
