Hi Folks;

Well I hope that Ray got enough on his Schwabs, Lees, and Wells to give him a jump-start. Next up on our hit parade is Jackie with "My Brick Wall" posted on 12/6/2002. A gist of Jackie's messages follows.

Jackie's main brickwall is g-g-granddad, John C. SANDS--who were his parents and siblings? She is also looking for the death certificates for John and her other g-g-granddad, Martin ERICKSON. She's requested info on both from Vermilion Co., Champaign Co., and the Vermilion Co. Genealogy Society, to no avail.

Data follows:
Rev. Martin ERICKSON
b. Dec.1,1840 Norway
d. 31 July 1906, Vermilion Co., IL

John C.SANDS.
b. 1833 at sea enroute from Ireland, d. 13 Oct.1912 Vermilion Co., IL
m1. 1857 Jersey Co.IL to Christena HUTCHCRAFT
m2. (Not proven)June 1870 St.Clair, IL to Nancy A. HAMILTON

Christena HUTCHCRAFT
b. 1840 IL died 1870 Mt.Vernon, IL:.

Children: Rueben, b 1858 IL
Mary, b.1861 IL--m. John CHERRY
John C., b 1870 IL

Nancy A. HAMILTON
b 1855 Scotland
d. unknown
Children: Anna L., b 1877 IL, d. 1932
Hugh, b. 1880 IL
Charles, b 1885 IL

Jackie found John C.SANDS in:
a) 1860 Bond Co.census,
b) 1870 Jefferson, Mt.Vernon census,
c) 1880,1900,1910 census,but can't find him in 1850. He would have been around 17 in 1850.

Misc: John SANDS was a private in the Civil War--Company F, 48th Inf., IL
One of the papers Jackie has states that John C. SANDS was b. in 1838, in Ramsey, IL vice being b. at sea in 1833.
The Rev. Martin Erickson was a Minister of the Gospel..

Hi Jackie;

I had hoped to have more for you by now but Genealogy.com isn't recognizing my membership right now.

A quick look at the 1860 Census also indicates that John was b. in IL. Additionally on that and the following page there are other Sands families, to wit: Jackson & Mary Sands & family, Wm. & Catherine Sands & family, and Willis Sands--all from IL. Its likely that these are kin. Finally there was a John Sands (possibly an ancestor of your John?) counted in the 1820 & 1840 Census for Gallatin Co., IL and also a John Sands in the 1840 Census for LaSalle Co.

Cheers and pass it forward, Wayne

Well Jackie;

You handed us a real can of worms here. (Has anybody else out there in IKK land made any progfress on cracking this brickwall?)

I'm not having much luck finding anything unique on John Sands--the curse of a common name. However, I'm firmly convinced that the John Sands in the earlier IL censuses (b. IL ca. 1837/8) and the one found in later censuses (b. on the Irish Sea in 1833) are two entirely different people. The younger one probably springs from an extended family in and around Bond Co., IL. The older one (and I assume the one that is truly teh one your looking for) probably lived out-of-state till near the turn of the century.

I did find several family trees* on Genealogy.com which reflect a Christina Hutchcraft as having two husbands, m1) John Sands--no issue; M2) John Hutchcraft with 9 children as follows: Elijah, Fanny, Martha, Mary, Elizabeth, John T., William, Sara B, and "Son". Another tree reflects J. Hutchcraft as the first husband and John Sands as the second. It also states that in the 1850, White Co. Census, Christina was listed as being 13 years old. All trees agree that Christina's parents were Elijah Hutchcraft and Eliza Rhodes. However, I don't feel confident that this is the right Christina Hutchcraft. Consolidated data from several trees, on Christina, John Sands and John Hutchcraft follow:
Christina Hutchcraft
b. 11 Jul 1837, Burnt Prairie, White Co., IL
d. 7 Nov 1880, Burnt Prairie, White Co., IL
M1) John Sands, 8 Mar 1857, White Co. IL
M2) John Hutchcraft, 30 Jun 1857, White Co., IL (I know, it doesn't add up, most of the trees have est. ranges for this marriage)

John Sands
b. est. 1805-1837
d. est. 1862-1924

John T. Hutchcraft
b. 5 Jul 1840, White Co., IL
d. Abt. 1900, Burnt Prairie Cemetary, White Co., IL
Note: John Hutchcraft had two more wives after Christina.
*Most of these family trees did NOT list John Sands as a husband, leading me to believe that this is a case of mistaken identity also.

A website with this Christina's family tree can be found at: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/w/a/n/Mary-F-Wann-MO/index.html
