I am a non smoker so naturally I would say smoking should be prohibited in a public place. I think it is however completely fine if a smoker is smoking outside, because it just doesn't bother me much. I have heard recently that the new Stelmach government in Alberta is going to ban smoking in all public places. Now is this just indoors or will this affect outdoor areas as well? Indoors I can understand as the air is just not circulated as well, but to ban smoking outdoors would be a bit harsh. The one problem outdoor smoking poses is the mess involved. To see unsightly cigarette butts everywhere is disgusting to me but this can also be combatted if ashtrays are kept in smoking areas and are maintained regularily. This is a tough issue to just say yes or no to as there are always options to consider. |

I don't know how far a public ban would go, but I know here where I live they just imposed a ban on smoking in all public buildings, to include bars and restuarants. One restaurant has put in a patio for smokers that is outside, and a bar has done the same. There is also a smoking ban at all school events, and within a certain number of feet of all goverment buildings and the college. Not even inmates can smoke in jail anymore unless they have earned the privelidge of going outside to the smoking area. Coming from an ex smoker, I support it. It's just not fair to expose others to our own bad habits. Especially one that has such critical life threatening risks. |

Well... I am a smoker and have always considered myself a "considerate smoker"... I think legislation and "sensitivity" is going way too far when they consider banning the ability to smoke in outside areas (that include in people's own vehicles and their homes). There is an application in the courts here in BC where a female resident of a condominium is trying to get smoking banned in an multiple housing complex. Her neighbor apparently goes out on his balcony to smoke and she claims it is drifting over to her balcony and bothering her. I think that people are polluting the common areas of this earth in many many ways... Car exhaust, industry pollutants, fireplaces, chemicals, medications... just to name a few... these are all finding their way into my water, my food, my air... I don't object to laws that expect people to refrain from smoking in public buildings but when they start restricting the ability to even go outside for a smoke, they are going way too far. |

I don't think that it could be prohibited. It is highly addictive and people would find a way to get it. Most smokers I know are very considerate. Em |

However, Smokers maintain that it is their right to expose their own bodies to the risks of second hand smoke. I don't think they have the right to expose others to those risks though. Speaking here of children and others that live with them. Non smokers do not have an option of whether or not to breath. Em |

I just had to come back and add a comment......after the public smoking ban was put into place here, I am delighted to be able to eat in a resturant and enjoy my food without the smell of cigarette smoke in my nose. I can even go and socialize at a club without going home and suffering the rest of the night because of my allergy to smoke. I love it. I know smokers dislike having to go "outside" to smoke, but it sure does make it nice. When I was a smoker, I always went outside anyway because I knew the smoke was not good for my children. So I know it's a hassle, but as a non smoker.....I love the smoke free environments we have now. coco |
