How optimistic are you that the U.S. will succeed with its mission in Iraq?

What we are witnessing in Iraq is another Vietnam, were there no oil in Iraq neither would we be.Personally I am of the opinion a good debate is a healthy thing, oppossing views are always welcome. The first rule on debating is respect, always respect another's right to their opinon.I perfer to debate with one of different beliefs and ideology, how else does one learn. Were world leaders to spend more time debating, maybe(just maybe)we would spend less time trying to kill each other. As for this thread Ms. Tama, great questionI do agree with the opinon that when one joins the military they should expect their chances of combat/at least serving in a combat zone is highly likely.Having said such,to waste our brave men and women needlessly on such failed/impotent policies such as Iraq, well, tis but a waste of our most valuable resources.Thank you very much Tama for this important question.

So, only those who agree with your reply get thanked? Interesting!"Waste our brave men and women!" I know, as a Desert Storm veteran, I am offended by the term "waste!" It is not a waste....the superiors of this country have given a task and the troops that are overseas are carrying out the task, regardless of the risk involved and how long it will take! I guarantee they do not see it as a "waste" of their time and a "waste" of our troops! Yes, there are casualties and it is tragic but they are working towards peace and it is a long battle! Peace out....

Amazing ... how (as of late) one has to explain every small detail as to what they post.

I was thanking him for contributing to this thread and for giving me a compliment about it being a great question.   I scanned thru his message so rapidly (getting my speed reading ready for tomorrow's trivia) ... that I didn't read it thoroughly.

Next time I'll try to be more specific.

Taxi, welcome to the community.

You're most welcome Tama,as fer the Desert storm remark, don't even remember Desert Storm being mentioned,as the reference was to Iraq.Hhhhhmmmm, also were one to take time to read my post, wasn't a knock towards any of our  military, but against impotent policies of our government. And our government has "wasted"our brave men and women in Iraq. Please take the time to read my post Maverick,as I am not so inclined to please as Ms.Tama is trying to be.If there some misunderstanding standing,I will be ever so glad to clarify. Were one wanting to exchange ideas,I'm there....If one just wants to bicker on YAWN  I haven't the time.

Pam,

Would I be upset if my son and/or daughter would be killed in Iraq?  Yes I would.  Would I think differently of the war. No.  I would be proud that my son or daughter served and gave their life to preserve freedom.  Is it better in Iraq now?  Yes ask the citizen on the street.  We don't hear that story in the main stream media because of their liberal bias.  I have a next door neighbor, a Marine, who has done two tours in Iraq and it upsets him to no end how the people actually love them there but nobody reports it.

Pam,  when my son completes his Meteorology degree in 3 more years,  he wants to join the Air Force.  If he serves, or ends up serving in Iraq that would be fine with me.  Again, he would be volunteering to join and if you join you KNOW that you might be signing up to go to war.  My son knows this and it makes me proud that he would join.

As far as being in Iraq for oil that is a load of bull.  We kicked Saddam out who was killing, raping, torturing his own people.  Killing and torturing kids in front of their parents, raping women in front of their husbands, etc.

Saddam, had strong ties to Al-Qaeda and once we finish getting the rest of Al-Qaeda out of Iraq the world will be a better place.

I "took the time" to read your post Taxi and those efforts of the men and women of our military are not "wasted!"

Tamara, you make a very valid point. How would we each feel about a war, any war, if our loved ones were the ones counted as a casuality. Obviously, we would not like to lose a loved one. But speaking from having a father serve faithfully in the U.S. Navy for 20 years and serving during both Korea and Vietnam, losing them is a fact of life. There is always a possibility of them losing their lives but we as members of the family have to realize is that they did the most noble thing anyone could do, they gave their lives for someone else. My nephew served in Iraq and we were worried about him every single second. But the thought of him dying over there was a possibility. My uncle was killed during WWII, by a U.S. warship. He was captured at Corregidor in the Phillipines and survived the "Death March to Bataan" only to be put on the Japanese warship to be transported back to Japan to be a prsioner of war. The Japanese navy did not signal they had prisoners of war on board so the U.S. Navy fired and sank the ship. We were notified afterward by the Japanese navy what had happened. My grandparents did not blame the U.S and did not change their feeling about the war then. this war in Iraq is a nasty affair but it was necessary. Imagine Saddam Hussien with nuclear weapons. If that does not make your skin crawl, nothing will.

P.S. Taxi, our brave men and women have NEVER wasted their lives!!!!!!!!!!!! My nephew, who served in Iraq, read your comments and he took offense to it. This war was sanctioned by the United Nations in the 17 U.N. Security Council's resolutions which told Iraq to comply with their demands or the U.N. would enforce the demands by force. They are on record for the public to see.

I am sorry Tamara, I did not answer your question. After talking with my nephew would served there, I am extremely optimistic that we are winning the war. We are setting up orphanages for the thousands of children left parentless by Saddam Hussein's murderous rampage. There schools going up all around the country and girls are finally getting some education for the first time in that country's history. Why the mass media over here does not broadcast that is beyond me. We just have to give their country time to stabilize themselves and we will be out of there.

SCBigdog, I suppose it is very difficult when one has one serving in this war as you and others have.  I have a nephew in Iraq and I worry about him day and night.  Please pray that he returns safely and soon.

Great response SC! I am glad that your nephew was able to read this and I am not at all surprised that he took it offensively! Those men and women who have and are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan know of what each day holds and they relish the opportunity to fight this war for the United States!

You brought up many valid points, especially those of the mainstream media who are depicting we are losing this war! And remember what these pics represent when thinking of the war! The first is a sphere from the World Trade Center! It is on display in New York City, near Ellis Island! And the Statue of Liberty, representing the freedom that so many people pursued in coming to this country!

Tamara, thank you for letting me know of your nephew serving over in Iraq. We will definitely add him to our prayer list for service men and women in our armed forces as well as our first responders. GOD bless them all who serve to keep us safe and free.

I don't pretend to understand this war, However, I believe we were lied to about it.   And lets not forget Haliburton and other companys that profit from it!!
