Someone finally did a book on life in a college town, that might be interesting. Basically, these are places in which life largely goes on hold when the students go home. Any there are very few local residents who go to college or university there.
College towns are amazing: they're dependent on students' presence for their existence, yet in many places the locals are happier when they're not around.
There's a down side to living in certain towns that have one major industry, whether it be supporting a college or tourism, or seasonal workers. When that sphere of activity stops, the town tends to shut down. This is the case with regard to those little towns in the Alaska Panhandle -- when the crusie ships are off season, places such as Ketchican and Skagway largely close down, and nothing happens. That can be rough if you want to get a dinner at night.
