Lenny, you'll likely get as many opinions on this as if you had asked what's the best saw, hehehe.
No program will do all the work for you and all have various learning curves. The two with the steepest learning curves but also 2 of the most powerful are Corel Draw and Adobe Illustrator. Many folks use Corel Paint Shop Pro (probably the most popular for creating patterns) or Adobe Photoshop (Elements). There's a couple of good freebies out there as well. I've seen some terrific patterns done with inkscape. There are tips and tutorials in the Pattern Making Tips over on the left.

I've tried PSP, but I'm not getting the hang of it.
I will say I have the Wacom Tablet and that seems to help a lot. I love playing with that thing.

Len,

I have tried a bunch of them and can get the job done with most, but some are easier for me than others.
My preference and this is only my opinion:
1. Adobe Photoshop Elements, or Gimp, a free program, to initially convert the picture and cleanup the details.
2. Inkscape to convert the program to a "trace bitmap" and save as a "plain svg" format
3. Corel Paintshop Pro to convert the "svg" format to a GIF format as well as put my name on the pattern and check for final "floaters". The nice thing about GIF format is that your file size is kept to a minimum, which is important if you want to post several patterns on one of these forums. You are only allowed 3gb of space total.

I initially thought I could do it all with one program, which can be done, but the results improved greatly when I started using several for different functions.

Correction, your maximum allowed space is 3mb NOT GB. My error.

Janis, I am new at the portrait making & don't understand the "lingo". What is the Wacom Tablet, or for that matter, what is svg or GIF ?  I have made some portrait patterns of my own & it is a lot of work, to say the least. If I learn more about the pattern making devices, I would probably appreciate the help they would give.  Thanks for any info.     Perk

Try Kodak easy share software. Click on edit after choosing your subject. Choose coloring book. This is a very good start. This is a free orogram.
