hi not sure  how to begin i have been told i have som and am waiting for 2nd opinion but just wondered  if i could info . i have this in my right eye but vision is ok. however now getting a sharp pain in that eye has any one esle had this .
also when walking down steps at time feel strange have to hold on to some thing then it getts better . can any of you tell me if this is part of som thanks

Yes, the problems that you are having are symptoms that are classic SOM.

In addition to all the movement, pain is a serious consideration for many of us.  Every single person with whom I have had contact has reported some type and condition of pain associated with their superior oblique myokymia.  All of the movement of your SOM eye can very well be stressing your eye and all of the attachments.  It registers as pain in your eye, the muscles in close proximity to your eye and socket, your face.  Additionally, because you are probably moving your head around, dipping, bobbing, weaving, in order to achieve some kind of decent visual effect, you will likely experience pain in your scalp, neck, shoulder and on and on.

Having difficulty walking down steps, heck, walking anywhere on any surface, can be an issue of safety for nearly every person who has SOM.  The reason that happens is that the movement of your eye causes you to have an assortment of visual disturbances due to the diplopia/double-vision created by that movement.  Each person will have experiences unique to their own condition, but will also have experiences in common with other people who have SOM.

Since you are awaiting consultation with another doctor(s), you might find it helpful to keep a diary or log of your symptoms, the sensations you experience and how you feel about all of it to share with that doctor(s).  The more information that you have to present to that person, the more effective her/his diagnosis and treatment protocol will be for you.

Now that this is placed where more members will find it, you will receive more support from the rest of us.

Hi, Sam.  Sounds like SOM--but the second opinion is a very good idea.  If it is confirmed, you have surely found the right place for support and information.  It's also great that you have found doctors who recognize the condition because many folks have waited years for a proper diagnosis.  The muscles twitching and twanging do cause pain for most of us--sometimes more and sometimes less.  If you just meander through past postings, you will find some good history of "trouble on the stairs"  and driveways, and supermarkets, and your own kitchen...... So, keep in touch and let us know what happens.   Annie

Thanks, Annie, can always count on you for a couple of cents worth of sense.  Ummm...anyone else have some words of experience and encouragement?
