This support group is devoted to the subject of
Superior Oblique Myokymia
and is available to all persons who have this disorder.

We come together to share, educate and offer understanding and support.

Superior oblique myokymia (SOM) is a neurological disorder affecting vision.
Superior oblique myokymia  is a condition that presents as repeated, brief episodes of movement, shimmering or shaking of the vision of one eye, a feeling of the eye trembling, or vertical/tilted double vision.  It can present as one or more of these symptoms.  Diagnosis is most often made by the elimination of other conditions, disorders or diseases.

We are not doctors, nor do we play them on TV.
While it is difficult for SOMers to find the right doctors and receive a proper diagnosis, we encourage you to be persistent, and always consult with your doctor before trying any treatments discussed on this site.  This site is a support group for persons with superior oblique myokymia, so please do not expect to find medical advice concerning your diagnosis or treatment.
You are encouraged to share this site with your doctor.

This support group is intended to be
kind, loving,
educational and supportive.
This community is a safe place to land, whether it's
about your SOM,
or any other part of your life.
We don't have many rules, but the few that we have are important.
The most important and supportive thing that we can do is to remember is that:
Behind every moniter sits a person with feelings just like your own.

So, think before you type

Because our site is dedicated to the support of a medical issue, it is extraordinally possible and seductive to unintentionally move beyond the scope of offering support and information about our personal experiences with our disorder, and into the unacceptable realm of offering medical advice.

Our site is a support group for persons with superior oblique myokymia,
and medical advice will not be given.  In order to keep our site safe for everyone who reads our information, members and visitors alike, it is essential that we become aware of the responsibilities of maintaining a place where people can come for information, but not be possibly confused by medical information that they should be
receiving directly from their own medical providers.
We have members who are medical professionals, but for the purposes of this support group, they are expected to leave that aspect of their lives off of this site, and are expected to conduct themselves only as persons/patients with SOM.  The only exception to this provision is for members of our management team.

Sharing of medical information is restricted to a member's:
 1. Own
2. Personal
3. Non-professional experiences.

To further clarify, do not offer medical information, data or opinions to another member's posting, even if it is solicited from you, or the group at large.  Additionally, do not offer medical information, data or opinions in your own postings.
This support group is not for the purpose of offering any manner of
professional opinion, facts, data, or other similar responses.
Members who violate this provision may be given a warning to behave themselves.  Responses to violations may include, but are not limited to, scolding, tsk-tsking, members being sent to their rooms without dessert, moderation of posts or unjoining, not necessarily in that order.
The only exception to this provision is for members of our management team.
This is a very tricky, and potentially dangerous, area, and we expect all of
our members to do their best to keep our site safe for everyone.
Member may share any details they like, but are reminded to
consider their personal safety when doing so.
In respect for your fellow SOMers, please do not ask someone to share personal information, names of doctors, facilities, locations and the like.

It is only fairly recently that these provisions have become necessary, and we apologize for the ferocity with which they are communicated.  One would think that a group of adults would be able to do all of this without prompting or reminders, but it seems as though that is not possible.  We are, all of us, thoroughly and amazingly fabulous human creatures, with all the wonderfulness that brings, but serious problems can occur when we do not think in a responsible manner before we post.
It takes only one person to put this site in jeopardy.
Please don't let it be you.

No advertising or solicitation is allowed.
Products and services are not
to be promoted on this site, nor may such links be
posted, without the prior approval of the managers.

Any persons seeking to misuse this community, cause problems, or
just generally be a nuisance will be asked to leave.

There are pages with which you should familiarize yourself
before beginning your journey with us.  They are:
We work very hard to keep our group safe,
and violation or misuse of any of these issues could compromise your membership.
Professed ignorance of these issues
is not an acceptable defense.

"Our Sight is the most perfect and most delightful of all our Senses. It fills the Mind with the largest Variety of Ideas, converses with its Objects at the greatest Distance, and continues the longest in Action without being tired or satiated with its proper Enjoyments. The Sense of Feeling can indeed give us a Notion of Extension, Shape, and all other Ideas that enter at the Eye, except Colours; but at the same time it is very much straightened and confined in its Operations, to the Number, Bulk, and Distance of its particular Objects. Our Sight seems designed to supply all these Defects, and may be considered as a more delicate and diffusive kind of Touch, that spreads its self over an infinite Multitude of Bodies, comprehends the largest Figures, and brings into our reach some of the most remote Parts of the Universe."

Joseph Addison
