Thank you Juds and fellow members for the pleasure of joining your group. As has already been said, I'm sure none of us want to be here but are glad for the support.

Here's my short SOM story ... SOM first 'manifested' itself in April 2007. It stuck around for about three weeks. It returned in mid-July 2007. I saw my family doctor and optician. Both were unsure what the problem and related it more to work stress. As I was going on vacation shortly after that, they suggested I wait to see what develops. As "un"luck would have it, it went away after about three weeks again. It returned in late February 2008 and stayed again for about four-six weeks. This time I consulted with an ophthalmologist. He then referred me to his colleague, a
neurological ophthalmologist. Unfortunately, the first time I saw him my eye wouldn't show any signs of SOM (until I sat in my car in the parking lot!!). When I returned a couple of weeks later (late May), he was able to see what was happening and diagnosed it as SOM.

I look forward to exchanges, questions and answers.

Phil

Cool.  That was quick!!!  I hope that other members will twitch in to welcome you, too, but didn't you have an interesting aspect to introduce into conversation?

What do you mean "I had something interesting to add..."? Refresh my lacking
memory, please...

I should have added in my brief history that I had a CT-scan done in August 2007 and an MRI in April 2008. Neither showed any abnormalities. Although the MRI did show heavy congestion in my sinuses leading me to have an allergy test. Now I know that I'm allergic to tree pollen (April-June), grass pollen (June- August), ragweed pollen (August and September), dust, cats and dogs... Thank goodness I'm not allergic to snow or I'd have to go live on the moon. Go figure.

The end.

Phil, you mentioned a query avenue about fitness...or lack of.  I thought that it was interesting.

Ahh... When I first encountered SOM, I was training for a half-marathon. I found that while I was running, the condition was not bothering me. I have continue to play hockey (the ice kind), tennis, squash, run, downhill ski and snowboard, cycle ... Basically I've remained quite active.

I've also continued my classical guitar lessons, although during the bouts it becomes difficult to read music.

I was just curious about other SOMers experiences in these areas.

Phil,
I exercise quite a lot as well and certainly notice the SOM symptoms less when I'm exercising. I just did a 40 mile mountain bike race this past weekend and had no SOM crap during the race but it actually was very bad immediately after. And it has sucked pretty much all week.

But keep playing guitar. That's always better for me. Take care, Tony

I myself am not athletically inclined.  However, I do exercise regularly.  And I have noticed that if I am moving, the eye isn't as bothersome (when I am symptomatic..which I haven't been for a while now knock on wood).  However, I do love to dance and if I'm having a really really bad episode, the dancing does not work so good.  uggh.  I do not have trouble riding my bike, but I do have some problems driving.  (Oh, wait...that's normal for me)
