O siyo, I have a question about totem animals, please. It seems that some people have totem animal that live hundrends or thousands of miles away, sometimes even on other continents. Sometimes they say that they come to know their totem animals just by reading about them, seeing pictures of them, and feeling an affinity for them. I am wondering how someone can have a totem animal and know the animal’s medicine without directly observing and connecting with that animal in some way. How is this possible? In the past, were the totem or medicine animals of Native American people only from those creatures that lived around them, in the same general geographical area? Wado, ![](emrose.gif) Mary |

Yes Mary I understand your question and thought on this. I think the ones who have totom animals who do not live near the animal has special feeling for this animal through prayers, meditations, dreams and such where its been so real, over and over. They do connect with them in the same way I mentioned. So it doesnt matter where or what the animal is, one can still connect to it in many ways, and know the connection , Mine is the horse and havent had a horse since I was a teenager, but its still real when I meditate and pray and when I am near one too. hugs annie |

Siyo Annie, Thank you very much for thinking on my question. Thank you also for your post about totem animals in another section of the message board here, which you posted between the time I sent my question and you replied. I read this post and reflected on it; it was helpful. Thank you also for your reply to my question here and for explaining why it does not matter where a person's totem animal lives in the world or how physically distant one is from the animal. You have helped me to feel confident that connecting with an animal though prayers, meditations, dreams, and other non-physical ways can be as real and valid for someone as making contact through direct observation or physical contact. My apprecation to you also for letting me know about The Wakan Circle. What a great source of learning, inspiration and "family" it is. I am grateful also for your patience and kindess - and that of the others here - in helping me learn and grow in understanding. Wado and hugs, Mary |
