On this day in 1851, the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux was signed. It was an agreement between the United States government and several Sioux Nations living in Minnesota at the time. The push for the treaty was to promote agriculture within the lands of the state. Tensions from this treaty are linked to the start of the Dakota War of 1862.
