Hi DawningStar,

I am taking St. John's Wort off and on for depression and have heard it should only be taken for so many days in succession and then stopped for awhile.  I am not sure of how much should be taken a day and also how long I can take it straight without it being toxic to my system, can you help me with this?

I take 300mg daily but only when I work and thats about 4 days a week.  All medications can be hard on the liver and kidneys if pre-existing conditions exist.  But in all things moderation is the key.  I find it works better if you take it with Sammie 400mg.

Hello Winds;
St. John's Wort is very good for depression and you are correct it can cause the body to become toxic if taken for long periods of time. If you buy it in pill form I would recommend you follow the daily doesage on the label . Most herbs that we buy in the health food stores are not very , fresh so I use my judgement as to whether the amount they suggest is helping me. I would say most of the time three times a day one  or two pills. You also have to take into account that it does take time to get the full effects of herbs in the system. Usually a couple of weeks. I would recommend that you take it for a couple of months than go off a week or two and than start again. Hope that helps you.
Take into account this is my opionion as I am not a medical doctor and this is only for educational purposes.
Shalom

Thank you MidNightsWildSong for your information.  I am puzzled as to what you mean by Sammie 400mg?  I don't know what that is.

Dear DawningStar,

Thank you for the information.  I am glad you could help me with the amount of time it takes to work.  At times I can get by taking it for a very few days to take the edge off of depression, but when my depression gets a little deeper than that, I didn't know how long I could take it, so thank you for your information.  It makes me feel better knowing.

Sam-e is S-adenosylmethionine  and is holistic and treats ; liver, moods and emotional well being and joint health (arthritis).  Can be purchased wherever vitamins are sold.

Dear Winds :
I have a couple more things about St. John's Wort you should also know . Sorry I should have mentioned them before in my first post .. If you are taking any other anti-depressent  such as prozac you should NOT take St.John's Wort and you also might become sensitive to light ..

St. John's wort should not be used by women who are pregnant or are breastfeeding.  The potency and purity of the preparations sold in the United States are unknown however I believe that are safe when used correctly. Looking for organic is probably the best.

As always this information is for educational purposes as should be used as such.

Shalom

Thanks DawningStar for this info too.  I am not on any antidepressants at the moment, due to cost and no insurance, so that is why I needed to know about St. John's Wort.  I am hoping it can help bring me back up.  I don't have to worry about the being pregnant or breastfeeding lol, but thanks for posting that.. it is important for those it could affect.  I know some of the depression with subside when the holidays are over, but for the moment it is a concern on many levels. Thanks again.
