You can make natural dyes from plants, flowers, roots and nuts. The blossoms should be in full bloom, berries ripe and nuts mature. Chop the plant material into small pieces and place in an old pot. Double the amount of water to plant material. Bring to a boil and then simmer for an hour. Strain and add your fabric to be dyed. Allow to soak overnight for a stronger shade. (Before the dye process you need to soak the fabric in a color fixative like a mix of 1/2 cup salt and 8 cups water for berries, and 4 parts cold water to 1 part vinegar for plants). Note that your hands and the pot will get stained, so wear gloves! |
