American Indian Blackfoot Frybread

Ingredients

2 Lbs. of lard or 2 quarts of oil , cupsof sifted flour, 1 TBS. of baking Powder, 1/2 tsp. of salt, 1 Cup of warm water.   Directions: Melt lard or oil in a skillet (fry pan).   COMBINE; separate bowel.  Add; baking powder and salt in a large mixing bowel. Add warm water in small amounts and knead dough until soft, not sticky. Cover bowel and let stand for 15 minutes.  Pull off egg size balls and shape to desired shape. In skillet, fry in lard or oil until bubbles appear on dough. Turn over and fry on other side until golden .                               You may add after sugar in a bag and eat it as a doughnut dessert, you may add butter and honey and eat it this way, you may add some kind of meat and wrap it for a taco depending on what or how you want to eat the bread. You can have it plain, use your imagination. Do not fry it long, when the oil is HOT it takes seconds when it frys and bubbles to flip it and get it out of the pan. Make them as big or as little as you want. Do NOT ROLL the dough or you take the SOUL out of the frybread it MUST be made with YOUR HANDS. Love, Paintmare.
