Joy in the Midst of Pain "The Painting"
Two months after my mom was diagnosed with pancreatic liver cancer my family had to pack up the only home we had known for over 30 years, because my dad was moving my mom to Florida. I can honestly say this was the saddest time in my family`s lives. Our minds were in a daze, our hearts were filled with sorrow and pain, and we were all trying to cope in our own ways. I was hanging on to an imaginary rope connected to God. My dad, my brother and two of my friends were all helping with the last minute walk through of the family house. We were all grabbing anything that was left behind by the movers. There was a HUGE oil painting (roughly 10`x12`) on the wall that was accidentally left behind; or maybe it wasn`t an accident; my mom hated that painting! Dad asked my friend and I to carry this immense painting down the street, back to the artist who painted it. At least, that`s what I thought he wanted me to do. So, my friend Mary Ann and I headed down the road, roughly a half a mile from my parents house. We were laughing at the sight of how funny this must have looked to cars driving past. We brought the painting up to the front door of the artist`s house. I rang the doorbell, but no one answered. So, we carefully positioned the painting up against the door and placed a large rock against the bottom of it, so it wouldn`t fall over. We were pleased with our handling of the situation and chuckled about how funny it was going to be when they opened their front door and saw it. Then we walked back home. My dad was out in the driveway watching us come up to the house. I was so proud of our accomplishment. My dad looked at me with confusion on his face and asked, "where were you?" I thought that was a strange question since he had asked me to return the painting. I replied, "What are you talking about? We just got back from returning the painting to so and so`s house". He grinned and told me the artist had moved about ten years ago. The painting should have gone to the Silberman`s house, which was in the opposite direction. My friend and I were laughing so hard at the whole situation; carrying it all the way to the wrong house! I had a vision of the people who now lived there opening the door to this huge painting they have never seen before (nor was it that attractive). We still laugh today over this. In the midst of sadness, life is so funny! Found at: Smile Across Your Heart |
