WELCOME TO

THE SAVE TARA/SKRYNE VALLEY CAMPAIGN

We're trying to preserve the Tara/Skryne Valley from the M3 motorway.
We're not against the M3, as long as it doesn't pass through the Tara/Skryne Valley

DON'T LET THE FATE OF TARA..........

...........BE THAT OF STONEHENGE

In August 2003 An Bord Pleanála granted planning permission for a 50-km, ? billion motorway scheme through the valley between the Hill of Tara and the Hill of Skryne, in Co Meath, Ireland. This valley is "chock-a-block" with monuments. Contray to National Roads Authority spin, the motorway does traverse the Hill of Tara, since it clearly goes along the side of the Hill.
This is "one of the most important and famous archaeological sites in the world," according to expert Dr Conor Newman.

Save Tara/Skryne Valley Campaign was formed immediately to oppose the M3 motorway alignment through this valley. It comprises local, national and international members. Time is ticking, and we need your help please.

I have been in touch with an aide in Senator Greggs office. I was brief but to the point. I identified myself as a registered voter. Stated my objections, and asked that he inform the Senator I would not vote for him in the next election if he chooses to sneak this in under the federal budget. Anyone can call you dont have to be in NH to get in touch with this man and make your views known.

Call Senator Gregg Today to Prevent Drilling in the Arctic Refuge

Dear Lydia,

We have a specific, and urgent, request to our WildAlert subscribers in New Hampshire. Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH) has been quoted in recent newspaper articles saying that there is a "reasonable chance" that an Arctic National Wildlife Refuge oil drilling mandate will be included in next year's federal budget which Congress is working on now. As chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, he ultimately decides what gets into the Senate version of that budget legislation.

Senator Gregg needs to hear from you today!

Please call Senator Gregg right now and ask him to keep Arctic Refuge drilling out of the budget.

Please call Senator Gregg right now and ask him to keep Arctic Refuge drilling out of the budget.

Manchester: 603-622-7979
Portsmouth: 603-431-2171
Berlin: 603-752-2604

If you've never called a Member of Congress before, don't worry. You simply make the call and leave a brief message with one of the members' staff.

Once you've made your call, please help us raise the pressure even more by forwarding this message to all your friends within New Hampshire and asking them to join you in calling today to stop the sneak attack on the Arctic Refuge before it's too late.

Thank you again for your all you are doing to protect the Arctic Refuge.

The Kleenex Forest Destruction Tour is visiting cities throughout Southern Ontario this week, and we need your help! Greenpeace activists are busy this week visiting stores that sell Kimberly-Clark products - including Kleenex - that contribute to the destruction of Canada's Boreal forests.

These forests, which have existed for over 10,000 years, are increasingly impacted by large and ecologically destructive clearcuts. Kimberly-Clark is the largest manufacturer of tissue products in the world and uses over 2.5 million tonnes of tree pulp from ancient forests each year.

We are calling on store managers to return this evidence of ancient forest destruction to Kimberly-Clark, the makers of Kleenex brand tissue products, and we need your help.

Each day this week, we will be asking you to call the head office of a store that we have visited, and remind the company that you don't buy Kimberly-Clark products because they contribute to the destruction of ancient forests.

Help Now

Please help stop Kimberly-Clark from destroying the Boreal forest - call a store today!

First Internet Hunting Death Fires Up Humane Society, ENS 3-10-05

First Internet Hunting Death Fires Up Humane Society

WASHINGTON, DC, March 10, 2005 (ENS) - Internet hunting has fired its first shot and claimed its first victim, but the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is not taking this news lying down.

The organization is calling on state lawmakers and Congress to ban the remote slaughter..

The scheme operates like a computer game where a person can point and shoot a rifle via remote control, though the rifle is real and so is the killing of animals in what amounts to a video-monitored canned hunt.

The desktop hunter pays several hundred dollars or several thousand, not including taxidermy and shipping of his trophy.

"What started as a depraved idea has apparently become a sickening reality," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. "This is a snuff film scenario in which animals will be senselessly killed for the voyeuristic pleasure of someone sitting at a keyboard. It is pay-per-view slaughter. This remotely delivered cruelty should be
shut down and outlawed immediately."

Pacelle says that in addition to animal welfare concerns, Internet hunting raises important questions for public safety and homeland security. "With the recent news reports of terror suspects on federal watch lists
having easy access to firearms, why would we make it even easier for these people to inflict their terror by experimenting with the idea of remote shooting with the aid of the Internet?"

According to the Fort Worth "Star-Telegram," a San Antonio hunter used his home computer to fire a remote rifle and kill a wild boar, becoming the first online customer of a 220-acre Texas canned hunt stocked with captive exotic animals.

The Internet hunting site received nationwide attention when the plan was announced last November, but at the time the remote system was not yet operational for shooting live animals.

Since then, the Virginia legislature has passed the first bill banning Internet hunting (HB 2273 and SB 1083), which awaits the Governor's signature, and similar bills are pending in Alabama (SB 302 and HB 557),
California (SB 1028), Hawaii (SB 1424), Maine (LD 50), Michigan (HB 4465), New York (S 2822), Oregon (HB 2528, SB 389), Tennessee (HB 1268, SB 1505, and SB 1895), Texas (HB 391), and West Virginia (HB 2890).

The HSUS is pushing the introduction of bills in other states, as well.

Texas is believed to be home to the most canned hunting operations in the United States. Clients pay large sums of money to participate in canned hunts, which take place in a confined area from which the animal cannot escape.

Most of the targets are non-indigenous animals, including several varieties of goats and sheep; numerous species of Asian and African antelope; deer, cattle, and swine; and bears, zebra, and big cats.

The HSUS estimates there are more than 1,000 canned hunting operations in at least 25 states.

LIVE-SHOT is a new concept. You can challenge yourself and compare your skills to other members with our on-line target shooting. We have developed a system where you can control a pan/tilt/zoom camera and a firearm to shoot at real targets in real time.

While your membership is active, access the viewing cameras to see how others stack up to your abilities, control the pan/tilt/zoom camera to take a look around, and schedule a reservation for your on-line shooting experience.

Currently, shooters will be able to fire 10 (ten) .22 caliber rounds at paper and silhouette targets. You may also have a DVD recording and/or the paper target from the session shipped as an option. Look for additional, varied shooting systems along with competitions to come online soon.

If exotic big game hunting is of interest to you, contact us at [email protected] for information on scheduling a hunt on our ranch in Texas.

Brought our attention by Calais Nox (thank you) @ The PentaGram

Recenty I watched a program on tv about the sex slave trade throught Russia, Eastern Europe and Mexico. It was horrifying to say the least. Girls can actually be bought for a couple thousand bucks and used for whatever purpose the purchaser desires. This is modern day slavery. There is a site called freetheslaves.net that was featured on this show. They have a very fast and simple petition, an activism sister site, donation options and lots of information on slavery throught the whole world. I think it is very important. Please take a moment to educate yourself on this horror. Thank you.

Action that can be taken if you feel like making a statement.

Tie a Green Ribbon

Unite Around the Arctic Refuge

America's Arctic Refuge is in danger. This week, oil interests came one step closer to ruining the wild coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge with sprawling oil development. In a backdoor scheme cooked up by drilling proponents, the U.S. Senate has included language in the Federal Budget that could remove protections prohibiting oil development in the biological heart of the Refuge. But the fight is far from over!

Make a statement today. Show your solidarity for America's Arctic Refuge with a visible symbol -- a green ribbon. Tie it in your yard, hang it on your home, pin it on your clothes or wear it around your wrist. Then pass it on. Give ribbons to your friends and family.

Millions of Americans feel strongly about this issue -- and together we will NOT be ignored. Show your support until Congress assures us that the Arctic Refuge is safe from oil drills.

Why This Will Work

Millions of Americans have made it plain that they want the Arctic Refuge protected and yet some members of Congress continue to ignore us. It's time to step up the pressure.

When your Members of Congress come home for recess they will see green ribbons on every street. Strangers who know nothing about the Arctic Refuge will ask about your ribbon and you'll tell them. Soon green ribbons will be tied in neighborhoods across the country, news media in every state will take notice, and Congress will not be able to ignore us.

We are counting on YOU to spread the word. Forward this message to your friends and family. Then buy a spool of ribbon and hand out ribbons to everyone you know -- at work, at church, and everywhere you go! It's easy!

Stand up for wildlife and America's wild places and tell oil interests that they have crossed the line. Don't sit quietly while our wild heritage is sold to Big Oil.

Political Update

The House passed its Budget measure last night, 218-214. It did not include any explicit language about Arctic oil drilling. But it does contain instructions to other committees that create a loophole for drilling language to be included. The extremely close nature of the vote offers hope to conservationists as responsibility for the budget moves to a House/Senate conference committee.

Both the Senate and the House have left for a two-week spring recess, returning to work April 4th .

During recess, congressional staff members will begin preparing for the Budget Conference Committee, a process that reconciles differences between the House and Senate Budget bills in order to present a single Budget for a final vote by both houses.

Arctic activists are planning events in several, targeted home districts. The political message during this time: Please vote against any conference report that would instruct committees to pass Arctic drilling as part of the Budget bill.
What You Can Do

Wear your green ribbons, and decorate freely with them. Make an appointment with your member of Congress and Senators and carry them the message that the Budget conference bill must not contain language that would open the Arctic Refuge to oil drilling.

Dear Members,
Some of you no doubt heard about the Senate's
controversial vote last week to allow oil drilling in the
Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, I want to tell you about
a sneaky assault on the environment being waged largely
outside of the public eye -- President Bush's aggressive
campaign to stack the federal courts with anti-environment
judges. Sign the petition: http://www.care2.com/go/z/22403

The U.S. Senate is gearing up for a showdown vote on the
nomination of William Myers, a former mining industry
lobbyist, to be a senior federal judge. Even though the
Senate rejected Myers' nomination last year, Bush has
re-nominated him, betting that a bigger Republican
majority since last November's election will help Myers
gain approval this time around.

Myers' record is one of anti-environmental extremism --
he's called parts of the Clean Water Act unconstitutional,
and consistently sided with big corporate polluters when
he worked as a Bush-appointed Interior Department official.
If confirmed, Myers will likely be undermining
environmental laws for decades to come!

The full Senate is expected vote on the appointment as
early as next week - so your action is urgently needed!

Tell your Senators to reject a lifetime judicial
appointment for William Myers!

Take action: http://www.care2.com/go/z/22403
This letter arrived in my email. I sent it, as sent to me, with a few changes.

Better do it Eco-Activism!

Overall, too many young people see the struggles of humans as separate
from the struggles for a healthy environment. It isn't because we have
bad intentions -- it's because a generation that does not care about the
impact of its lifestyle on the environment can be easily manipulated for
corporate greed. We are getting played out. And unfortunately, the
environmental movement has actually helped enforce that disconnect by
seeming to draw divisions between the natural world and its human
inhabitants -- and by seeming to worry more about the former than the
latter.

That is the context for the next stage of environmentalism. You have an
oppressed, depressed, furious mass waiting to be mobilized. And sure,
some of us eat at McDonald's and wear leather shoes -- but we feel it is
possible to demand better from our government and from ourselves for our
environment. We feel it is imperative to connect the different survival
struggles we are engaged in if we truly hope to sustain a viable
movement for change. You will not die if you try to link hands with us
in this struggle, if you try to meet us halfway.

We are in a unique organizing space right now, fresh off the election,
understanding that it is imperative to combine electoral organizing with
community organizing with issue organizing, in new and unique ways.
Environmentalists have done groundbreaking work in this arena, getting
citizens informed and involved around policies and petitions. But the
movement has failed to reach the urban masses, and it has fallen prey to
the marketing of the right, which casts caring about the planet as goofy
liberalism instead of instinctual self-preservation.

So I offer three transition steps for the leadership of the
environmental movement:

   1. Change your framework. You have to frame environmental issues in a
way that makes sense for us and relates to the issues we care about. But
you will have to get closer to us and to the work we're doing in order
to make that happen. We're talking about racism -- meet us there. I know
the research shows one thing, the statistics make your case; but they
also make a case that the most pressing issues in my life should be
stopping the prison industrial complex, stopping the HIV that's ravaging
my community, stopping the president from cutting Upward Bound funding.
There's a place for you in each of those battles, just as there's a
place for those activists in the battle for the environment. It is not
either/or. The loss of your borders won't mean a dilution of your
vision, it will simply mean a larger, greater, more inclusive vision.

   2. Be easy and appealing. You need to turn up the heat and the appeal
for environmentally friendly products and practices, while putting time
and energy into bringing down the price. It's not written anywhere that
everything recycled has to look used and cost twice as much. Lose that
sage color scheme and price your wares to Target. If you aren't willing
to be a little savvy for the survival of the world, then how committed
are you? Take five minutes and catch up to what appeals to the greatest
number. The environmental movement needs to make its home in this real
world of ours.

   3. Stop the environmental evangelism. I say this as a loving
criticism of the people who are at the forefront of this work: you often
get so caught up in the sky-is-falling mentality of environmental work
that you can only see the urgency of your own issue. That's not how to
approach folks. Fiscally conservative people of color vote in their
economic interest, not because someone approaches them on the street
apoplectic about mercury in the water. Mercury in the water is a
completely relevant topic for black folks, but not if we can't see our
faces on and in that movement, and see our interests as clearly part of
the platform. You've got to talk to folks about the things that will
move them -- which means you've got to identify how your work relates to
the issues that matter to other people.

As a young woman of color who doesn't do environmental work for a
living, I believe environmentalism needs to become something that the
masses can integrate into how we live our lives. It's nothing personal.
Every issue-based movement needs to think in terms of solidarity and
collaboration right now.

How this discussion can move forward into worthwhile proposals and
actions -- that is the question. Stepping back and thinking about a
vision for a movement is absolutely necessary. Dramatizing its slow and
agonizing death borders on indulgent. Too often, people rush to say
something is dying when it's merely in a period of transition. Be less
presumptuous. Shedding an old skin is not death but renewal, and those
who follow the life of the planet should grasp that better than anyone
else.
