Last night I attended a norse runic ritual ... it was amazing!
We began with a collective chant, then cast the circle ... the priest and priestess invoked Freya and Odin, then told the tale of how Odin was given the runes. We then used 5 runes to correspond with the 5 elements of the circle ... kenaz, laguz, isa, ansuz and eihwaz. Each of us was to cast the runes into the gods light, then move into the quarter dictated by the closest upright rune ... this small divination was to indicate the changes we would need to face in order to progress. There were 18 of us and I was the only one to cast the spirit rune. I moved to the centre of the circle and meditated on the rune eihwaz as others quietly discussed the runes given to them. A strange feeling of isolation settled over me... here were 17 other people within 6 feet of me and I could barely see them, I could hear them as muffled murmurs and knew I was not physically alone... and yet... thats exactly how it felt as I stood in the light cast but the alter candles. A heavy feeling of expectation flooded me, and when the priestess came to me and spoke her divination for me, the words settled into my head with a certainty... each word was a confirmation of what my life is undergoing and the potential I see before me... a spiritual path-marker, one that tells me what the next step is to be. We rejoined our circle and closed it out after passing a candle around and giving thanks to the gods.
It is a humbling experience for me each time something higher or bigger then me leans down and whispers into my soul. I left the circle last night with a sense of rightness that has carried over into today. I am relaxed and confident that I am still on the right path and all will be well. The light within has been fed.
The following is an interpetation of the spirit rune... although not a direct quote from the priestess it is the traditional meaning of the rune:
"The rune that penetrates through the 3 realms, heaven, earth and underworld... it is the path for transformation of essences in any of these realms into each other. ... self contained, transformational fire from within... This is the hidden immortal fire of will that can remain despite all odds. It is the great mystery rune. Yew is that which the strongest bows are made, your power is fluid and flexible, your aim assured by the strength of the gods given Yew. Without that power you will break, retain the ability to flex and move and you will win out and be the Protector. On a mystical level it represents the ability to put ones inner self into stronger safer territory, it is also a symbol of death and resurrection through the inner strength which prevails"
