Snow flitters down from the dark sky here in present day Elmshade. lightning rapes the horizon in the far distance. The smell of soot, smoke and spent flesh reaches the amazons nose.

Reaching down the paladin notices no movement from the small girls body. Seeing only the back of her flaxen head she guesses that perhaps the child is sleeping. Grasping her tiny frail hand tells the lean woman what the lack of the thin ribs moving meant. This girl was dead....

A few inches away a distinct pair of tracks lead away from the cold stiffening body. The ring she wore was simplistic bone carved from a goats shin. A childs toy. Commonplace as were her clothes and thhe cloth ribbon that adorned her hair. The foot prints dissappear into the woods out of her immediate sight.

Behind her from the village were several other tracks and a single large furrow leading up to this area. Telling her little as she wasn't adept at tracking.

The lad was spent. His mind shattered. He wouldn't survive the coming days without being forced to live.

The crumpled girl on the other and has a curious green dust on her. It makes her smell like cow dung.

The little girl is a tiny frail thing. her waist long blonde hair is tattered and tangled. Streaks of tears cut clean lines from her impossibly large blue eyes down her pale porcelain cheeks. Her simple pillow case dress used to be a soft off white but now is stained and frayed.

Ignoring the cookie the tramatized tot springs into Eleine's neck and hangs on dearly while plunging her eyes into your hair. She trembles from the poison on her and the strain of the encounter. When she whispers the single word her labored breath leaves a hot circle on the warriors neck. "Elmshade........"

The feel of the small child in her arms brought forth an unusual longing from Eleine. She tipped her head slightly and resting her against the child's golden hair for a moment then spoke softly. "My name is Eleine and I am going to take you to a safe place.  Can you tell me your name? Before we go anywhere, Little one, lets get rid of your dress. I trust not the green powder upon it."

Moving gently but swiftly the Knight soon had the dress removed from her. Wetting down a cloth, she wiped away the dirt from her face. Seeing the child in only her chemise, Eleined surmised that it would be enough for the few steps to her saddlebags. "Wait just one moment."

Then she went to the boy and her words were just as soft as she prayed. "Holy Tyr, please take this child into your embrace. Let him find peace with you." Then she placed a soft kiss onto his forhead. The prayer had been spoken in the fluidic nordic language of her home. Once she was done, she made the child as comfortable as could be, but knew it would be best for him to return to Vallhala.

Staning once more, she gathered the little girl into her arms and strode from the hut out into the sunlight. Her golden chestnut heavy warhorse sniffled at the little one's hair and whickered softly. "Don't mind Arnsgunnar. He simply wishes to come to know you." Pulling out her extra clean tunic, she slipped it on the child. It was so very large on the child that she couldn't help but to giggle softly as she mounted the Warhorse with the little one in her arms.

"Do you know the path to Elmshade Little One?" She asked as the she directed the stallion back to the meadow.

The little girl could hardly be heard as she mumbled her name into he shoulder. "I'm Sydney"

Now staring at Eliene as she wiped the diseased pollutant from her the little girl is straight faced and tightlipped. Cocking her head slightly she examines the warrioress.

Stepping to the iron door it opens on it's own accord, the spell upon it broken with it's casters death. The outside of it has great claw marks as if from a bear.

Once outside Eleine doesn't miss the full grown male brown bear that has her horse stamping and snorting like a wild beast. It begins to lumber towards yuo snorting and growling fiercely.

Ignoring all this a curious number of ravens, cardinals, blue jays and crowes litter the lower tree branches. Each staring at you with a flicking head and making an irritating fuss. You also see a few squirrels together and a herd of deer led by a very large stag moves behind th snow capped ferns.

It's almost as if thier moving in, but as Sydney speaks in some odd toungues and waves to them... they each simply stop moving and just watch you as if they had some kind of higher intelligence.

Coming near your warhorse you see the little girl has an odd effect the mount. Holding up her hand he allows lowers to her so she can stroke his wide forehead. When again she says a few strange words he bobs his head and gives her a maternal nicker.

Practically oblivious to the clothes Sydney reaches out and feels your healthy hair. She seems to like and shows a small smile when she points to the treeline. My human friends are all over there.

In the distance you can make out the small columns of smoke given off by some building unseen. You see the snow field, a stream that will have to be crossed, and then the thick of pine wood beyond that.

As they depart the iron door slams shut. You can't overhear the voice on the inside. "Very well warrior. We shall meet again. I promise. "

You can't see the form that slids thru the mirror.

You can't hear the crunching and sucking sounds.

Eleine watched everything, her rich blue eyes taking note of the wild animals and thier reaction to Sydney. Her arms tightened slightly about the child in a gentle hug. "You are very blessed to have such a gift Little One. Very few can talk to the animals as you do." She went on the path that Sydney indicated.

Arnsgunnar tossed his head and managed to turn towards Sydney, with a soft wicker. Then he looked at his Paladin, and Eleine laughed. Reaching into a pouch at her knee,m she pulled out an apple. The knight handed the reins to the girl sitting in front of her. "Here you go, you hold the reins while I quarter up this apple." She pulled a small dagger from her boottop and sliced the apple. Then she removed the seeds from each quarter.

"Just rest the reins on his neck Sydney and have some apple." She gave the girl a quarter, then extended a quarter to her mount. The warhourse took the apple greddily and crunched it in a matter of moments. This was made easier because of the bitless bridle the horse wore. Eleine crunched on her quarter, then gave the last quarter to Arnsgunnar. "Once we find Elmshade I'll make sure you get a proper meal Little One."

She wiped her hands clean on the hem of her surcoat then lightly fingercombed Sydney's hair. her touch was very gentle and Eleine was stunned to her core at just how maternal and protective she felt of this child who had just barely entered her life. Sighing softly her thoughts drifted to Karsi, the man who had proclaimed his long standing love for her, and her recent discovery that it was Karsi that her heart belonged to. It helped that both knew that the other's first comitment was to Tyr and his directives. Hopefully, someday they would wed, and they could have a babe of their own.

Then the Knight came to the fore, reminding her they were still in dangerous territory and she needed to be alert. Wrapping a single arm about Sydney, she once more picked up the reins. "Have you any idea how long it will take us to find your friends Little one?" The nickname she had given the child was spoken with an easy affection. Cuddled against her the way Sydney was, she could feel the steel of Eleines plate armor through the lightweight surcoat the Knight wore.

Sydney's soft blue eyes are of the impossible sort, seemingly large for her heart shaped features.

Your warhorse seems to genuine like the tot and takes to giving her a playful nuzzle that extracts a happy giggle from the wartorn child. A bluster and a whinnie from the stallion is met with more of the girls tinkling laughter. Grinning she pats the steed's turned head and babbles some more non-sensicle babe talk to him.

He loves you alot. He calls you his herd mother. That's a very important name to horsey's. It's like thier family. A few more syllables and the horse shakes it's head and whinnies again in a mocking laughter.

The heart-warming smile still on her lips the flaxen haired child holds round your neck and sits on your hip so she can remain to see forward. She has matchsticks for bones and weighs less than a pouch of sand. Interested she takes the apple, but finding the feeding of 'gunnar much more interesting she also serves him her piece of apple. She seems to enjoy this immensly. Snatching her hand back as he gobbles the fruit brings a shrill laughing shriek from her. Exhilerated  she slaps her hand on her leg and springs up and down slightly.

Thinking how long it may take she admits with a big shrug of her small shoulders, I Dunno. I din't pay attention again.... I sorry. I know I'm not 'posed to wander off. Mommy always said so, but now she's gone so I don't know where to go anymore. I's kinda lost.

Beaming up she adds, But the peoples at Elmshade are nice! Specially Peppy! He's my friend!

Scruntching up her face she sneers in thought. Course,  I'm not sure where he is right now.  *laughs* He's prolly still lookin for me. We were playin hide and go seek. And then I forgot we were playin.

I saw that boy cryin so when I asked him what was wrong that bad monster-man took us to his cave. I forgot alll about our game. I sure hope he's snot mad wif me for forgetten.

Behind you the flock of small raptors follows in relative watching silence. And tthey do seem to indeed be watching.

Eleine doesn't miss the flanking herd of deer or the bear following thier much faster scent.

As they start to move and she straightens Sydney's weed-infested hair. The child absentmindedly tips her head from side to side and hums a song in a long forgotten druidic verse. Before long, if you allow, there are a few gray squirrels on the saddle and a number of chickadees riding in your hair, on your shoulders, and on the saddle's horn. gunnar seems to be tolerant enough of the ones on his head.

If you have any nuts the squirrels are all up in them.

She smiled softly as Sydney told her what Arnsgunnar called her. "Arnie," Eleine used the shortened form of the Stallion's name that Karsi alone usued. "Is a very special horse. One day I prayed for my Lord Tyr to send me a mount fitting for that which he would have me do. In the next morning Arnsgunnar had appeared. He had a different saddle and bridle, but as we grew to be familar with each other so things changed."

As the squirrels and chickadees take up residance on her saddle along with Sydney, the Knight gave an amused shake of her head. One of the furry squirrels discover the small packet of pressed dried fruit, nut and honey bars. Eleine just could not help herself watching the creature try and nibble on the bar. By the type the three bars were gone, all of the squirrels were covered with the sticky sweet.

As for the birds, the Norsewoman pulled out a small handfull of grain. She caught Sydney's hand and poured it full of the grain. "Here you go Little one." She watched, laughing softly as the birds transfered their attention to the Child.

"When I was a tiny baby my mother left me at the Temple of Tyr. The man who became my father found me and raised me. When I was about your age, a woman named Nuama decided she was going to become  my new Mommy." Her eyes softened at the memory,

"Lets get back safe and sound to yout people.."

((You assume the clump of buildingss in the distance are what she means. In the distance you can make out the small columns of smoke given off by some building unseen. You see the snow field, a stream that will have to be crossed, and then the thick of pine wood beyond that. A days hard ride North because most ppl have to goto the old stone bridge to cross. If you can cross up here then it's half a day to town))

Still more interested in being held then staying where put Sydney has a tendency to touch things. She is infatuated with you and Arnies hair and mane. She takes turns braiding them and weaving flowers into them. PS- the birds drop her flowers from somewhere.

Curiously she taps your hard clothe (armor) *tap tap* What's that? Do you have bark-for-skin? Ifso I've seen that before, sometimes it happens to me, so don't be scared.

And PS- the squirrels go ape-sh!t on the sugar. They're everywhere at 120mph. Theyre getting sticky little footprints on everything. They'll probably pass out soon.

Arnies smart ya know? You wanna know what?! You can drive him wif no hands! Jumping back down in front of you where you had handed her the reins she sits but she puts the leathers around the saddle horn.

Touching him on his right rib with her little bare foot she waits. She does it again and he continues to walk forward and straight. She puts her hands on her straight hips and gives him a bit of a heel kick. He leans his head back and shakes his head drowning her in his braided flowered mane. An exasperated string of jargon flows from her. In a minute he's swatting his head up and down as she hangs about his great neck and talk in his ear.

Touching Arns on the right rib takes you suddenly right. And then the same thing left. Twin taps makes him stop.

More than trying to impresss you she twists in the saddle and stands up to look you in the eye. She hangs her arms about  your collar and beams to you, He can do other stuff to! He's super smart. All you hafta do is nudge him with your feet *looks at her proportions compared to yours* or with your knees anyway. That way you can keep your hands free. You know, in case you hafta to make sand'iches while your drivin Arnie!"

Feeding them the grain seeds It's no thing for her to pick up a bird and gently stroke it's head before she happly underhandlaunches them back into the air. Each one is followed by an elated Wheeeeeeeee!

And each bird flys up and around and then back for another go at it.

Settling down she admits. I don't know how far Elmshade is. I wuzzn't payin no 'tention.

Hearing about her childhood Sydney looks worried and then sad. A huge chin furrowing frown breaks her into a puppy dog stare.

Your Mommy gave you A W A Y !
Where you bad!?
Tyr?....... tear? I get tears sometimes. When I cry or I get hurted. Specially when I think about my mommy and Poppy.

Was Tear Tample it a sad place where everybody cried and left thier little babies. I don't like that place Leiney! A bear hug ensues.

My Mommyz gone to heaven now. We lived by Elmshade. Fore that I lived somewhere else but I was a baby and can't 'member. Eyes widening, Hey! MEbbe I lived where your from! Huh?!

So who's gonna be MY new mommy? You? Did you come here to get me?

She looks puzzeled, Are YOU my Mommy?

A fat frown makes her bottom lip stick out, If so I'm sorry....I don't remember what mommy looks like for shore.

Eleine's soft laughter floated on the air about them. So much had happened so recently to the Knight that had left deep scars in her soul and on her body. For right now she enjoyed the balm of the sunshine that was Sydney. Feeling the Little one's hands in her hair as she braided flowers into the silvery blonde locks filled her with contentment. Seeing the same flowers in Arngunnar's mane gave her reason to chuckle.

The ring of the child's small fist against her armor led to Eleine catching her fist into a gentle grip. "This is called Armor, Sydney. It protects me from the creatures of Evil that I fight against. Like the creature that had you captive. I'm very relieved to know that you have some protection too."

Her soft blue eyes watched the antics of the squirells on thier sugar rush. At the first chance she had, the Knight made a bridge from her body into the trees. Knowing that squirells liked high ground she remained standing in the stirrups until all three of them were in the trees once more. "So much for my emergency energy supplies. Tis a good thing I have more of those buried in my pack somewhere."

Listening her talk to her warhorse, Eleine tipped her head slightly. "Arnie is a very special mount, given to me by the God I follow. His name is Tyr" and there she said his name slowly so Sydney would catch the correct pronounciation. "He is God of both Justice and of Battles. He can also be a kind caring God who has, I suspect, a tender spot for little girls." Her smile appeared as Sydney stood up to look her in the eyes.

Lifting the child up, the Knight sat the little one upon her shoulders, holding her hands in one of her own. "I think my Mommy gave me away because she did not think she could take care of a little baby girl. I was very happy with my Daddy for a long time. Then my true Momma came into my life. She bribed me with the best sugar cookies in existance." Eleine sighed softly. "I wish I had some hot out of the oven right now, but I can't always have what I want."

When the child asked if she was to be her new Mommy, Eleine gasped softly. Her Lord had set her feet to finding this very special child, yet it did not feel right that Eleine would keep her. Bringing the child to stand on the saddle so she could look into those clear blue eyes the Knight spoke softly, "Sydney, I would be honored to have you as my own. Yet I feel that there is someone else who will be your new Mommy. Until we find that person though, I will be your new Mommy." She gathered the child close to her. Slipping into the musical Norse language that was the first one she ever spoken, Eleine spoke softly. "I swear that I will protect you with every breath I take. That I will love you for as long as I draw breath."

Drawing in a deep calming breath, she gave Sydney a reassuring smile. The creek ran in front of them blocking her path. Halting Arnsgunnar, she studied the creek to try and figure out if the Warhorse could make it across. While Eleine wanted the child safe, she would take no risk in getting them to Elmshade.

Sydney felt a soft spot for a few ppl that had been nice to her since the demon folk had killed her parents in front of her and stole her away. The boy Reyco had been especially new and Peppin's wherabouts worried her.

Hanging on to Eleines neck with her thighs and playing within her strong hands Sydney was more content than she had been in a long while. She hugged the tresses and head of her new Mommy intently. Both of you have gross stuff on you but it's kinda lost in the moment.

As if you had been friends for a hundred years the little girls voice tells you, I love you, Mommy. I am so glad you found me again. I was so lonely since all my family was gonned.

My first mommy had to give me away to. That's what my fairy godmomma said anyway. Sometimes SHE brings me cookies. The kind with sugar lumps in them. They're gewwwwd!! I like those.

Pushing her honey blonde hair from her eyes she looks to Arnie as she thinks outloud. I have friends I can ride. The big earth mother sends them to me if I ask her. I  have lots of friends I can ride! Would you like to ride some of them sometime? Some of 'em are funny feeling. Like Samba the big ole snake or Sheetara the kitty, she's fast and makes my tummy tikle. I had horsey friends to but they don't come near town none. They run the flat ground in between the big hills.

Let's go back to Elmshade. The bluejays say it's the place where the small smoke rises. But we have to cross the river firsted.

Closing her eyes as if she was thinking way to hard the small girl utters a few unitelligble words and before your eyes stones from the bottom of the deep ford grow and rise above surface of the water ((Pebble to boulder)) They have enough force to push the forming ice aside. Each one is large and flat. enough even for your mount to easily step across the wide stream.

Ok, let's go look for my friends now!

Elmshade sounded like a nice safe haven for the Little One who so constantly amazed her. The feel of Sydney's hands in her hair mage her just giggle softly. Catching one of the little hands, Eleine brought it to her lips. "I love you too. I didn't know it was you that I had been looking for until now." Her strong voice had softened, but the sincerity could be clearly heard.

When it was time to relinquish the child to the ones truly meant to care for her, Eleine knew the price she'd pay. Still it was far better to love, then to become barren of such emotions.

As she listed the animals she had rode, the Knight just shook her head. She was sure that noting the child could do would amaze her. Then Sydney whispered a few words and the path appeared across the river. She couldn't help the gasp that escaped her. Guiding Arnsgunna across to the other side Eleine spoke softly.

"Sydney, you have been truly blessed by the Gods above. Many adults could not do what you  just did without years of study and practice. I want you to make a very important promise. I want you to promise me that you won't do things like the stones in the river, or the calling of your friends if there are people about. Leastwise as best you can. I know that sometimes you will have to so for one reason or another, which is why I did not say never. Promise me?"

She waited for the Little Ones answer. Once they were on the other side of the river, Eleine dismounted, then tipped her head over to swoop Sydney into arms. "We need to get cleaned up. If we are clean then our chances of sucess are much higher!"

The knight set the child on the ground, then slowly, carefully removed her armor. In a short while, only a light shirt and leggings remained. Then she pulled of the tunic from the child. After that Eleine removed her last two articles of clothing.

With that last bit gone, Sydney could easily see the powerful strength of the Woman she now called Mommy. When she turned, the child could see four deep scars that went from her right shoulder to her left hip. turning around she showed her offerings to Sydney. "I have soap and cloths to dry with. The soap smells like sandalwood. Now lets get into the water and get cleaned up."

It took some time, and much splasing for both of them to get cleaned to Eleine's standard. Once the were dry, the Knight cleaned the gore from her armor. When that was done, She pulled the child into her lap with a giggle and braided the childs hair into a simple single tail, tied off with a bit of ribbon Eleine had found in her gear. The tunic she had worn was rinsed out in the river. very soon the child wore the Knights best tunic of rich blue with her Mother's nordic embrodiery upon it.

Once that was done, with Sydneys help the armor was replaced onto her frame. The old surcoat was stuffed into a bag of other laundry. Now with her armor shining, and the heavily embrodied sucoat, Eleine looked like a Paladin out of the fairy tales. The only major difference is that she was a she, not a he.

Her long silvery blond hair was braided up into a coronet to keep it out of the way. Mounting up once more,  she reached down and scooped up Sydney. "Now that we are clean and ready to go, shall we see what Elmshade Village has for us?"

Sydney's future was uncertain but she hinted at a past of grief and suffering.

The little girl babbled about her animal friends like one does the weather. But the paladin actually took the time to "listen" to what the beaming child was really saying. These were not idle games or imaginary friends. The tiny girl had many gifts that a priest or mage may possess.

Asking her to refrain from public displays of her gifts Sydney looks very understnading. Yea, ok. My Poppa used-ta say that too. She raises her shoulders to her ears and puts a shushing finger to her lips. I promise....but sometimes things just happen. 'Specially when I get scared or have dreams. She shrugs with two palms up. I dunno how, but they just does.

I'll try my bestest to be good for you. I want you to stay my mommy forever, so I won't do anyfing for you to be mad at me. OK?

Getting her cleaned up takes a short bit of time. The water is freezing cold and Sydney shifts from one foot to the other while chattering her teeth. Even then she sees your scars and runs a finger down one. Do you fight alot? I don't want you to die. I want you to stay with me. (a curious warm sensation heats your skin from under her leaf sized hand. Heals 7hpt) Don't get hurted any more Mommy. Stay wif me where it's safe!

She loves the bold colors of the cloth you give her as she twirls around on the fronsted ground singing like a songbird. You have to roll back the hems to keep her from stumbling.

She's a curious sight dancing in the midmorning sun with a halo of bright birds. You would never know that such a happy innocent child knew anything of demons, war, or family lost.

And how she "made" things happen was still a bit of a mystery.

She spoke of her friends at Elmshade but she had also told you her family was lost to her. Perhaps more answers lay in the direction of the town with the lazy smoke coming from it's country stacks.

Scooping her up brings another excited gale of laughter from her. Sydney seems to love being in motion and being touched. She is extremly happy overall judging by her tittering giggles and habit of hugging onto you as you travel.

The Knight was startled at the child's healing touch, but then swiftly realised she shouldn't have been. Even though Sydney's tiny hand had traced one of the Balor scars, the healing flowed to one of the Injuries sustained from the battle to free Sydney and the lost boy. Her request that Eleine not fight brought a slightly sad thoughtful smile to her face.

She responded finally to her question about fighting alot as they rode. "Sydney, I am a Paladin, a warrior for my Lord Tyr to use as he sees fit. I have trained for this honor since I could lift a training blade, which would have been at the same age you are now. I fought as a Page at the age of 10, and was chosen for a Paladin canidate at the age of 13. I won my spurs when I was 18. Most are not chosen for this path until they are 16, winning thier spurs at the age of 21. I was born to this path, just as you where born to do all the wonderful magical things you do." Eleine gathered the child close to her, giving her another hug.

"As for always being your Mommy, much as I want to be, the Gods may have other plans for both you and I. If you stayed with me, I would return to my home Temple up North and take a teaching position. It would not be fair or just to raise a child while riding a Knights Path." She took a moment to enjoy the feel of the child in her arms, the smell of sandlewood that came from both of them.

Eleine was far happier with the child in her arms then she had been since before the Balor had held her captive for three months. Sighing softly she pushed the memory of all that away, instead focusing on Sydney. "Are you Hungry? I have more apples that are easily in reach. You should eat something yourself." She didn't realise that her voice had taken on her own Mother's tone of concern or the rich warmth that came from caring deeply.

It should have alarmed that she felt so towards a child she had just rescued and met, yet Eleine felt no scold from her Lord Tyr, rather a gentle encouragement filled her soul. It was clear to Eleine that she had a role to play in Sydney's life, even if she knew not what it was.

Sydney appears very young, now that you can see her up close and personal. Her small size is a bit deceptive but she can't be much past 6 to 8 years old. That kind of explains her struggle with spoken words.

Hearing everything the pretty woman said Sydney bounces onward hearing only what she wants. Ok! So your my new mommy and we're gonna go live at your house!

Goody! Her hug encompasses Eleine's neck and chin. The child's hair is as fine as silk and her skin is warm as rose petals. Can I have a horsie!! I want a white one with brown spots!              I'll call him SPOT!                  And I'll love him    and feed him     and stroke him     and he will be alllll mine!

And you know what? Me and spot will be bestest friends ever. Almost as good as me and Balu!

Climbing your shoulders as easy as a monkey in a tree she thinks outloud some more, Can we have an orchard? I like apples, and You like them. *giggles* And Arnie shore does too!

Naw I'm not hungry yet ma-maw.

We use-ta have a garden with veg-a-tables soo big we got pretty blue ribbons at the fair. They were this big! *holds hands far apart as possible* they were bigger than me!

She lays her tummy on top of your head to lean over and hang upside down in your face filling your view with her wide sunny smile and inverted golden tresses, What else can we do momma? You wanna catch snow flakes on your toungue wif me? or mabies make some snow angels?

Oh! Oh! I know! We can play hide and go find! I'm good at that! I'll bet there's more kids at elmshade that'll play wif us!

As the sun sinks and the cold air continues to blow loose snow about you the inviting village glows warmly in the horizon ahead. Food flavored smoke rises from the short thick sturdy inn located on the leading verge of the town.

Eleine couldn't help, but to smile at Sydney's exuberance. Still hearing herself refered to as Momma set a thrill through her. "Sydney, not to curb your enthusiam but I would much prefer to be called Momma over anything else."

She reached up and pulled the child over her head completely. Reaching in a Saddlebag, Eleine pulled out her rich blue cloak. The broach that closed it was Tyr's symbol ringed by swords, and it had the look of age about it. Many more years the Eleine herself had. Pinning the cloak comfortably about her throat, she pulled part of it aside.

"Sydney, we are getting very close to elmashade, leastwise the tavern. I want you under my cloak and behind me, where it is both warm and safe. No arguements, please. Once we are safe inside then we can play a game I learned as a girl,  Ok?"

Smelling the woodsmoke, looking about at the place she cautiously approached.
