The other family I am interested in is the DONAHUES and in particular Patrick born c. 1830 who married Hannah Harrington in the Catholic chapel in Stourbridge in 1860.He came from GALWAY( maybe about the mid 50's as 1861 is the first census he appears on.)

As regards his surname I am a little concerned that the spelling that was adopted by later generations using the U might not be correct because the marriage certificate shows Patrick could write (although he was the only one at the ceremony who could!!) and he spelt his name DONAHOE.

There is a family "legend" that at least 3  children  of the above families emigrated to America probably in the 1880's( and several do disappear off the radar! although I haven't found anything conclusive as yet) The only other story concerning this was that one of these people was (supposedly) killed on a railway line and another (supposedly) married into the DOAN family (they of the back ache pills.)Depending on your age that is either going to ring a bell or cause a blank look!
Years ago these pills were very popular and I believe sold world wide.  The company does not exist today but as been swallowed up (if you'll excuse the pun!!!!) by one of the pharmacutical giants.

Obviously I would be interested to see whether there is any truth in those rumours but I have put details on the message board at Ancestry U.K. and had no response.

My main objective is to trace the families Irish roots and I hope you will be able to assist me in this quest.

Hello Mike

Thank you for all the effort you are putting in on my behalf--------- you are certainly exploring avenues on the Irish side that I didn't even know about!

To answer your question re. Ellen Donahue/Donahoe(!) She didn't disappear she was still living within the family unit at 1881 only they were called DONAHIVES. She married James Beavon in 1886 (not Michael Harrington although his marriage does appear on the same page in the register) By 1891 she and her husband and two children are still living with her parents Patrick and Hannah( Ann) and by 1901 she is a widow with 5 children and living next door to her parents.

The children who I think may have gone to America (and I've nothing to substantiate this) it's just that they disappear and I can't find marriage or death certs for them are:
FANNY DONAHUE born c.1875
THOMAS DONAHUE born c.1868       All born Stourbridge.
CATHERINE DONAHUEborn c.1871

Also CATHERINE HARRINGTON born 1857 Ireland and Aunt to the above people also disappears ( I discounted the 1870 Stourbridge wedding because she would only have been about 14. Although I did  check out the 1871 census for the two men that appeared on the same page of the register and drew a blank.

Apart from these four, all of the other members of these two families lived, married and died in the Stourbridge area so they have been relatively easy to keep tags on (once I got use to all the variations of their surname! Mind you I don't suppose their Irish brogue would have helped especially as the census enumerators were more accustomed to Black Country accents!!)

I must admit I have done no research on the Irish side, apart from looking at the two areas Bantry and Galway on the map because I really didn't know where to start, I've only been using the computer since Xmas and although the English census records are not easy the Irish side looked mind-boggling!!
So I really am grateful for all the info you have given me although some of it is still baffling .i.e.I didn't really know what the "Griffiths" was until I asked a friend.

Anyway thanks again.

Chris.
