Hi Maggie

It can be a bit confusing as we seem to have three different members called Maggie.

I will see what I can find for you.

Hi Maggie

I found James and Mary Dixon on the 1881 census which you mentioned, and also in 1891.  However, they seemed to have lost a few years off their ages by then!

1881 Census
Living in Sanderson Terrace, Cramlington, Northumberland

James Dixon  Coal Miner age 29 - b Ireland 1842
Mary                                age 28 - b Ireland 1843

I haven't listed the children, but I think you may have this info anyway?  If not, do let me know and I will list them.

1891 Census
Still living in Cramlington, Northumberland
Now at 31 Terrace Row

James age 43 - b Ireland 1848
Mary age 40 - b Ireland 1851

Hi Maggie

Mike has found some contacts whom you may not know about:

Desperately seeking Mary!!
Mary McNally was my g.grandmother born c.1851 in Ireland. She married
James Dixon on the 16th February,1871 in Clontibret, County Monaghan. A
year later they had moved to Glasgow and had their first child. From there
they moved to Northumberland (Cramlington). As far as I know this is where
they lived out their lives.  I know nothing else at all - have hit the proverbial brick wall. Any help would be so appreciated.
Regards, Brettney

Hello brettney, just spotted your message.
As regards Mary McNally, Clontibret, its hard to tell and in fact you've
done well to get where you have. As the crow flies, Clontibret is 5 0r 6
miles from my McNallys - details below. The name McNally is also very
common generally in that part of Monaghan.
I'm a McNally from Monaghan, many of my ancestors apparently emigrated
before or during the famine in the 1840's and later and so I assume that
their kin are still out there somewhere - perhaps Mary is one of these!?
who knows!  My home page with lots of general info on the McNally's and on my family can be seen at http://www.angelfire.com/journal2/mcnallygenealogy/
Send me an email at any time.

Thank you Marian for your help. i do have the childrens name and yes i noticed the drop in ages too .( ah if it were only that simple! lol)
One of the contacts Mike found is actually my cousin who is on the hunt as well
I think James and Mary would have been married in a church, presumibly Catholic. Is there anyway of finding out about churches in Clontibret at the time as I've been told that the parish areas may have changed since then.

Also do you know if the Irish marriage records have the usual home address, parents names etc.?
Thanx to both you and Mike.
Maggie

Hi Maggie

Do you have James and Mary's marriage certificate?  If so, it should state their fathers' names.

This is the Irish Family History Foundation website for BMD and some census records.  Unfortunately there are still about 12 counties not online yet, but they are adding them all the time.  It is free to register and search but if you want to view and print a record it costs ?.00 per record.

I will try and find the churches in the Clontibret area for you.

Hi Maggie

Unless you know for certain, don't assume that they were Catholic.  There are a number of Presbyterians in Co. Monaghan so I wouldn't rule them out.

These are the R.C. churches.  It seems there are three in the Clontibret area.  It is only a few miles from the Armagh county border, so keep an open mind.

This is interesting too.

And

Clontibret Presbyterian Church

Clontibret congregation is situated about 4 miles from the border with Northern Ireland at Middletown in County Armagh. The congregation dates back to 1715 but split into two in 1798. It was re-united in 1905 but both buildings have been maintained up to today.

Hi Marian,
Unfortunately i only have Josephs b.c.. and the Northumberland census'.

Margaret (my grandmother),a daughter of James and Mary, was disliked by the English family she married into because she was Catholic. One or both parents were Catholic and this is what led me to believe they would have been married in a Catholic Church as it seems the children were raised as such. I will check the Presby. tho as any lead is a good lead.

Thanks for the Griffs. Value. and the extra info.

regards Maggie
