I am trying to locate the origins of my Bridget Deboe who married Benjamin Allen in Sydney NSW in 1842. Bridget arrived on the Helen in July 1841 from Dublin. Her shipping record indicates her parents names as Thomas and Julia. I have noted her surname as Deboe, as she indicates that name on the birth registrations of two of her daughters, ten years apart. Her shipping record indicates her name as Daboa, and her marriage record indicates her name as Taboa. The death records of her two sons indicates her name as Donohue or Donoghue, so I have a lot to look for. The best guess at her birth year is 1818, and this should be within a couple of years.

regards, Warren

Warren,  The NSW bdm indexes are known for many typo errors due to transcribers having to read some very strange handwritten records and try and guess what they say.  Some are just impossible to read and they have to guess which is unfortunate
It is probably DEBOE
the other name DONOGHUE may be a second marriage for the mother but this could be under a wrong spelling as well
search historical indexes
Good luck with this one
Liz

Hi warren,DID A LITTLE more digging on the name.
Deboe was originally a french name DE BOW. It was varied from deboo, debo, deboe to debough.
I think possibly to hide the french factor,There were several ways that the name changed to make it sound more IRISH.
Its interesting the fact ,Bridget used the name Deboe .AS liz said it could have been a mistranscription as Bridget tried to change the name or listed the children in a different name as Donoghue. She most probably was unable to read or write,so would not have known the difference.
As you will have seen The name Deboe is mainly found in Kildare or Westmeath.
She must have arrived just after the Famine time.So it may be difficult to trace family in Ireland.Registrations for that period do exist but via the Churches.
I suppose eventually a database will hold most of these people who Died.
But some they may never find.
The Irish Family History Foundation ,hold the records i added in a previous message and some in the IGI.
There was no record for Bridget ,Thomas or Julie.under  Deboe.
So yes i agree that you should look for Donohoe or Donoghue.

Hi Mike,
              Thanks for your assistance.
I found a couple of references to Deboe in the Westmeath area, one to do with a marriage to a Robert Bollard and the other (if I remember correctly), a birth for parents Jacob and Susan.
Bridget married Benjamin Allen in Sydney 1842, and their chidren who were baptised in the R/Catholic Church (which occurred whilst they were living in Sydney) had the mother's maiden name for Bridget as Deboe. The children baptised at Camden (outside Sydney) had references to mother as Bridget or Bridget Allen - in the Church of England Church. Bridget indicated that she could read and write on her shipping, and indicated that she had no relations in the colony (1841).
I have been in contact with a Thomas Deboe from Liverpool area who indicated that someone who had been doing research in his family thought they had been also called "Danby", and that they were also researching in the Kent England area.
I think I have also found some Deboes in Cork, which is where some other descendants of the Allen family advise they were from. More to do.

Regards, Warren

Hi Warren i noticed in Rootsweb someone Said the Deboe Family Came from Germany And were Palatines In the Next Section they had this
They may have been French Hugenots but they came to America in 1732 to Philadelphia with Germany Palatinates. They later moved on to Pittsylvania county, Virginia by 1788. They may have come to Philadelphia 17 October 1732 aboard the ship "Pink John and William

Warren,  It's funny that they married in Presbyterian Scots church in Sydney and then had their children baptised as Catholics.  Maybe the family changed their religion or that may have been the only church available at the time

Re: Marrying in Presbyterian Church. I also thought it was odd. There may have been some friction between the R/C and Church of England Churches at this time as regards requiring change of faith. Lang's Presbyterian Church may have been the easy alternative. There may have also been some friction as regards religion between the parties to the marriage.
Before I go too far with assumptions on surnames, I would like to try and confirm or otherwise whether there is a Deboe (spelt that way) connection. As I mentioned previously Bridget indicated that she could read and write, and if that is the case I have no reason to assume she would not get the name correct. Alternatively if she was fibbing and she could not read or write, I think it highly unlikely that the two birth registrations for the R/C Church would have the Deboe name with the same spelling some 10 years apart.

Cheers, Warren
