Maikki FIP reared its ugly head today with one of Shar's beautiful cats. He hadn't been eating because of a bad tooth which was going to be extracted today. I got a call from Shar this morning and the vet couldn't pull the tooth as Shar's furbaby was diagnosed with FIP because they found a "massy fluid" around his lungs and it was hard for him to breathe. He was diagnosed with FIP. He also was an indoor feline so once again this came as a shock to us. Now they have a vaccination for FIP. Why now I am asking with bitterness. Shar and I will have to keep a good eye on all of our cats because of this as her 6 cats and my 6 cats were altogether in our house last summer until Shar and her hubby could find an apartment and of course they all came in contact with one another. I have no regrets about that as her cats are loved by Irv and I also. Her animals are our family and vice versa. Maikki I did ask the vet today about the rest of the cats getting this and there is such a slim chance they will develop this horrible disease even if they are carriers. The vet did say to take precautions when we come into the house from being anywhere and wash our hands as soon as we get in the house. I just have to shut my eyes and all I can see is Shar's beautiful Niko's face. A sad Maggie |

That FIP is absolutely a murder virus, a horror to face as it appears like a thief and hits your baby dead in front of your very eyes.
Thabita always had a big appetite and eat herself fat and happy. Suddenly she did not want to eat. She hesitated to jump up but she wanted to be cuddled standing up. I was puzzled because she did not like to move. Then I found her tummy was so tense. She was uncomfortable laying tucked, she stretched herself out. One morning I noticed her tummy was unusually big, like a pregnant cat. I was very worried so I went to my vet that very day. He found out she had fluid in her tummy and said it is never a good sign. She too had difficulties breathing as the lungs were pressed by the big sack of fluid in her belly. The test showed unknown cells and that's the mystic FIP, the wet variant.
My vet explained FIP is developing from Corona, a common virus among outdoor cats but also well known by breeders. Corona can be treated and kept away by vaccination and by a strict hygiene. Keep several litter boxes, at least one per two cats. Clean the litter boxes twice a week with soap. Corona might get into your home with dirt on shoes. Breeders do have this problem and you can bring home a kitten with Corona.
I did not know about this before but how on earth can you fight it if you don't know about it and there are no signs your cats have it? Corona keeps silent. When it develops to FIP everything is lost.
Currently I have not much strength to be online. I am in a bad shape with my RA as I did not have the Remicade treatment this time and I also have Irit which effects my eyesight. Tomorrow I will travel to the hospital where my foot surgery was done. They will make an ex ray and put a new bandage.
I am worried about Sluggo so I feel I need to check up him at my vet. This is really too much to an old girl like me but I have no choice now.
I am so sorry Shar has experience now with this horrible disease. Poor Niko, poor Thabita. I am so saddened.

Maikki according to the vet I spoke to personally I can say that I don't think Sluggo will get fip. Apparently the chances are so very slim. Agreed that he might be a carrier but that doesn't necessarily mean it will ever develop. My eyes are strained from reading everything and anything I can get ahold of about this disease. Is Sluggo still eating and doing his normal activities, Maikki? It is not fair when felines get these horrible diseases. They are innocent creatures. ((Huggs))) Maggie |
