shaking vision in right eye, headaches from prolonged eye trouble, pain in my left side of my neck from head tilt, and i recently found a lump at the base of my skull in my neck (doctors say it's a swollen lymph node). my vision tends to get worse when that is swollen... the swolleness comes and goes.

I started having double vision and that strange "twitching" in August of 1998. I went to several opthamologists and they had no idea what was wrong. Some of them were very understanding, but puzzled, others acted like I was CRAZY. I went into remission in December of that same year. I was busy working, taking care of children, etc and soon my "mysterious eye twitching" ceased. In December of 2003 I had my gall bladder removed and as I was recuperating from my surgery it returned with a vengenance! In August of 2004 my opthamolgist made an apt for me with a Neuro-Optho. Needless to say, my eye "did the dance" and he knew in just a few minutes exactly what was wrong.

My first episode lasted about a week. It was after an evening of too much to drink. I have never been so hungover. I eventhought perhaps someone put something in my drink. I wasn't bothered by it again till 3 months ago. My right eye started pulling inward and twitching.
|
Too much television. Alcohol but not the evening of the drink but the next day. Sunlight, fatique, first thing in AM approx 10 minutes then better till lunch, then better till supper then better. Reading in bed at night. sometimes I read with one eye shut. Hey what ever works!!

Jan 2006
|
Dec 2005 - stationary objects moved up and to the right through my left eye - - in a shakey pattern which seemed to have a pattern similarto a pulse. Movement was fairly continual, but not entirely constant. I noticed the right side of line-items (i.e., bulleted items on a computer) moving up at an angle, moreso than the left side of the same line. I had partial relief by looking through the top of my eyes. More symptoms were experienced with computer usage, reading (sometimes), tv watching (larger screen especially), and anything where I was REALLY trying to focus - - just chatting with someone wasn't always a problem. Prior to that, I had one or two short episodes (a few weeks) but short enough and mild enough to not get a dx or not pursue further.
|
Initially triggered by intense focusing - i.e., computer, reading, darkness with some bright/distinct lights, large screen tv, different lighting (but I could never exactly pinpoint it - - sometimes fluorescent lights, sometimes dim lighting). After triggered one any day, it doesn't calm down until the next day. If I don't do anything to really focus, it's not too bad.

I think in 2001, may have been earlier as I think of it. I was into X-treme sports before they were a sports. Been knocked unconsious up to 12-15 times. Been hit in the head to the point of seeing stars countless times. Have broken many, many bones, I think I'm trailing Evel Kanivel for the most injuries.

Double vision, oscillations, lightheadedness and head pressure but never pain. I have had about 6 episodes since it began, each lasting several months and not returning for anywhere from 1-4 years... Only one Opthamologist has ever seen and diagnosed my sypmtoms since they subside everytime I go to the Doctor! But, NO physician will diagnose SOM without witnessing an episode themselves...I don't blame them for this. But this is why it is so difficult to diagnose. I have had MRI's and MRA's (which are more specific to soft tissue swelling or artery & nerve compressions that could be causing the symptoms). Each time, the results are completely negative. Both tests are done simultaneously, so have both if you can. I have on occassion been diagnosed with Sinus Congestion based on a regular X-ray at my ENT doc's office. He treats that and what I've noticed, is my symptoms DO vanish.
|
It is triggered by wine, coffee, stress, sinus problems, driving, reading, working on the computer. But when I am in complete remission, none of these trigger any symptoms.

Ibuprofen, nasal inhalers, antibiotics and Sudafed for the sinus problems which I believe is the cause.

None, since I refuse to take anti-seizure drugs like Tegretol or to have the surgery recommended.
|
Having an exascerbation (return of symptoms) presently which began in November 2005. Again, I have had Left sinus congestion off and on since that time too!

Double vision, bouncing/shaking and twisting right eye. Pulling, twitching area below eye. Also, dry painful right dizzyness or light headedness, loss of balance, ringing/roaring in the ears, nauseau, tension and anxiety
|
Flickering/pulsating lights such as in a Flourescent Light or a computer in need of repair. Seems like lack of sleep, distress, worry and fear make symptoms worse.

Timolol Maleate Ophth. Sol., Betaxlol .5%

Timolol didn't seem to do much other than cause my affected eye to burn when taking the medicine. Betaxolol seems to reduce the pain, dryness and double vision but doesn't stop the twitching or shaking right eye completely
|
Self prescribed Mindful Meditation, exercise, Sacrocranial Massage, Neuro PT--special exercises for the eyes to prevent nystagmus
|
Improved but still having symptoms. Hardly ever have double vision and the medicine seems to reduce the pain and dryness of the SOM Eye

I am intrigued and helped by the SOM ongoing discussions. Maybe I will not have to re-invent the wheel in terms of finding a permanent solution to the SOM. I would like to see more discussions about alternative approaches such as Acupuncture, Massage, and more about why the folks who take medicines are getting symptoms reduced. Was it the medicines that helped or did the SOM simply go into remission. If I understood more about what helps others and why, I might be able to believe more in some of the medications for SOM (become convinced that they will work and gain from the Placebo Effect if nothing else.
