Yes  the pipe should have prayers on the smoke done  to bless and purify it. I was not taught that it had to be blessed in a ceremony but I am sure it would be fine too...  Annie

siyo Annie, should the initial prayer on the smoke to bless and purify it be performed by an Elder or is this something I can perform myself?

 Eagle Heart      You should take your pipe and go to a special place where you can be with nature and our Creator alone. There you need to send prayers on the smoke((( to cleanse and make it sacred))) and  to ask Him to bless  your pipe. When this is done , send prayer of thanks. Put your pipe in a special cloth to keep it cleansed until you use it. Most people always cleanse it with each use.       hugs Annie
