Mourning | "In indigenous cultures, when someone that we care about is dying, there is a very intense need to mourn. When you don’t release the mourning, it will make you sick. Certain Anglo cultures have a different concept. If you release the mourning, you are looked at as if you lost control over your emotions. The spirit of the person who has passed away that you cared about is not then free to move on into the spirit world because the mourning was not complete. The people did not purge their bodies of this sense of grief." Sams adds that mourning to Native people is like a bow. The people moving on are the arrows. Mourning a loss allows the spirit to fly into its new non-physical life. | |

Thank you for that post. I lost my best friend Three months ago and I haven not been able to mourn. I have been told it will come when Im ready to handle it. I was also told it takes sometimes up to 6 months for teenagers to start mourning. I just hope I will be strong enough when that time comes. This is a very good post. Thank you for your time |

Death is nothing at all, I have only slipped away into the next room, I am I and you are you; Whatever we were to each other, That we still are. Call me by my old familiar name, Speak to me in the easy way which you always used, Put no difference in your tone, Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we shared together. Let my name ever be the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effect, without the trace of a shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant, It is the same as it ever was, there is unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner. All is well.

Annie I come in here and read this from time to time. I lost my daughter a year and half ago. Sometimes I just need the reassurance that it is Ok for me to mourn, cry, kick, and scream. I just thought I would tell you that this post has meant alot to me. Wolf Dancer |

I was taught that we had 12 months to mourn even though sorrow may last a lifetime. We are given 4 days to wail and be forgiven our loudness and our loss of control. Crying out loud will help the spirit move away from us and into the direction of the Clear Blue Sky, should that spirit lose direction in the in between world. When the four days are finished our tears should not be loud ones because we are to remember that their departure from here is an arrival there. When the 12 months are finished our sorrow might last a lifetime but we are to remember the one that is gone with our spirit and with our hearts and celebrate for that one's next life being lived. This is according to my teachings and of course will vary from nation to nation. There's a phsycological benefit to our spirituality many times. Giving yourself goals and time dates are healthy and are tantamount to working toward a healing goal. The emotional benefits are tremendous. Our old ones knew these things and so provided us the tools to enriching our lives with these old teachings. Blessings, Snow |
