Dear Shelby, My life just wouldn't be without meditation. I have fibromyalgia and osteo arthritis along with deteriated disks in my spine, and I don't take medication for the pain. If it wasn't for meditation, I would be in the local mental institution. I was addicted to codeine, and pills seem to have a way of manufacturing the pain so I want to take more, and all they did was mask the symptoms, instead of getting to the root cause which needed to be healed. My thinking was if one will work, more will make it better, faster and quicker, always looking for the quick fix to handle life's problems instead of dealing with the feelings and issues life sent along me way. I have been in recovery from active addiction (alcohol too) for twelve years, and if it wasn't for meditaiton, I would not have been able to maintain my sobriety. Sobriety for me meand "soundness of mind", which means I have to empty my head, get rid of the chatter, and give the God of my understanding room to enter, so I can hear what He has to say, instead of listening to the echos of my own mind. We have an Alcoholics Anonymous Step Eleven meeting in this area and because I don't have a car, I don't get to it very often. It was a very spiritual experience for me when I first went several years ago. They opened the meetings with the Serenity Prayer, the Third Step Prayer, then read the Eleventh Step Prayer, which is that of St. Francis Assisi, which was followed with candles lit, lights out, music playing for ten minutes, total quiet for twenty, followed by five minutes of music and lights turned on. Portions of Steps Ten, Eleven and Twelve were read and discussed in part and if you wanted you shared about the meditation or you could keep that private, and before the discussion the Step Seven Prayer was said. The best for me is music for the mood of the moment, me alone with my God and sometimes I use my crystals, sometimes I use my medicine wheel, other times my tarot cards, and something new I have been trying, is just sitting at my table, saying a prayer, finding the quiet, and as each thought, no matter how small came into my head, write it down on a piece of paper that I have in front of me. It is a very good way of finding out how my thought patterns and my life is going at the moment. Love Always, Angeljst42day |

Hi Shelby, I know this is an old post but i am just taking my time going through the postings while waiting on the development to start. I do meditate on a daily basis, I find it calms me and soothes me for any troubles that i face. I try to meditate before the kids get up in the morning, and before i go to bed at night. my little boy likes to join in if he comes through in the morning and i'm still doing it. I find that incense sticks help relax and put me in the mood to meditate, Lavender, Musk, frankinsecense are my favourite's to meditate with. I hope you have been finding your classes helpful and helping you on your path of life. _Mandz xxx |

Thank you for sharing your recovery with us. I take my hat off for you! CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I am still battling with cigarrette smoking. Have tried to give up millions of times before but now realise that without meditation the "echoes in my mind" always win by giving me every excuse to carry on smoking. Please share some of your "tecnhiques" to calm these same "echoes". I am not meditating on a daily basis but will start today. xxx |
