O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free! From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee Does religion have a place in your anthem or pledge of alligance? Does it offend you either way? Is in "God We Trust" okay for an entire nation? And which god is it anyway? |

When it comes to the debates here in America, most people take it as the Christian God since the ones who wrote the Constitution etc., were WASPS. However, I personally do not take offense to it. I make the choice to put my own definition of which god it is. I will however refrain from starting a discussion concerning whether or not religion has a place in government because I am still not sure where I stand on that issue. But for religious references to be included in songs of patriotism, I personally have no problems with it. Of course, I don't necessarily agree with banning prayer from school either, but it should be open to all; the prayers should be more open and not geared strictly towards the Christian faith.
Just my two cents worth.

Grrr... I've been having problems posting the lyrics to The Maple Leaf Forever. Right, well... We can always revert back to "The Maple Leaf Forever" But alas, it seems that ever present "God" is still a bother eh?. In all honesty, I like our anthem. Who cares if the "G" word is mentioned When it was written, it was written that way. I dont think we should modify the past just so its PC in the current times, otherwise we would have abandonned the Celts as Headhunters and transformed them into really cool Transformers or something. I miss my childhood It really doesn't bother me, and I dont think it should bother anyone. If people get bothered with their country's heritage, then should probably move, that or get thicker skin and suck it up. |

Hey Red,
Good question.
:-)
Personally I don't have a
problem with the mention of God in our national anthem...as long as we have the
freedom in this country to choose our beliefs and to call God by what ever
name(s) our spiritual path requires.
So, nope, I ain't
offended!

Actually, it no longer bothers me ... like Gypsy, I've modified it to suit my own inclinations, lol The god that I sing of, happens to be Cernunnos or Herne ... those who I feel embody the spirit of my land. This fact may freak a teacher or three out, but what the heck? Besides I am very patriotic of my nation and am hell on wheels when I find students wandering or showing disrespect during the brief rendition of the anthem ... french or english is being sung. Believe it or not I'm even less flexible when it comes to prayer in school .... either remove the Lord's Prayer all together or create an all inclusive one for Humanity. |

Well, my two cents as someone from the US:
I stopped saying the Pledge of Allegiance once I realised what it meant. Actually thought, isn't it kind of funny to pledge allegiance to a flag, anyway? Actually have started to enjoy Total Chaos's Pledge of Defiance lyrics: http://www.plyrics.com/lyrics/totalchaos/pledgeofdefiance.html
As for the National Anthem...it's great to have a national anthem with war built in! :o)
Cheers, sæskwač |

I must agree with you, Imbas. I find my patriotism is much stronger when Dixie is played than when the actual national anthem is. Of course, I find myself saluting the Lone Star, before I do the US flag.
