I am trying to trace Sidney William Smythe who was born in 1901, (for a friend who does not have a computer.) So far I have got his marriage certificate which states he is a bachelor age 29, occ. bricklayer. Fathers name is Ernest Smythe (deceased) occ. dentist. He married Ethel Edith Green a spinster age 20. Her father is George James Green, occ. compositer. They both have no. 4 Astley Street, Camberwell as residence at time of marriage. There is a family of Smythes living at no.5 Astley Street in the 1891 census, but I havent been able to prove they are connected.
I also have his death cert. He died 12th January 1963, 134, Firhill Road, S.E.6. his age was 62 years and his occ. Motor Lorry Driver. The informant was his son Peter Smythe. Unusually in the Name and Surname section it has Walter Sidney Smith otherwise known as Sidney William Smythe. I have trawled through the B.M.D.'s and can find no trace of his birth certificate, 5 years either way. Also cannot find an Ernest Smythe, dentist in any census and as none of the family know Ernest's wifes name I have hit a brickwall.
Any help you can give would be very welcome,
Sue

This is only a remote possibilty, but it's the only William or Sidney showing up so far with father named Ernest.  More searching to do yet.

Could this be who you are looking for?  It's the only one listed from 1890 onwards.

Re Smythe search
1901 census
According to the marriage certificate of Sidney William Smythe, his age is 29 therefore making his birth 1901, and his father Ernest was a dentist. So this seems unlikely to be the right one.

1891 census
This Ernest Smythe would be too young to be Sidney's father

Birth Jun 1908
I looked at this one as a possibilty but surely his marriage cert would not have his age as 7 years difference. I might send for this cert anyway just to prove it one way or another.

Thanks for your help

Please re-read our message no. 3 of discussion carefully, noting census years.  Also we must bear in mind that it was very common for people to lie about their ages.  Nearly everyone did it!  Not only on the censuses, but also on marriage certificates. Very often also, parents did not register their children's births for quite some time afterwards, in some cases as much as 10 years after the event!  Yes!  This was not at all uncommon.  So we have to give them some leeway.

OK, so on the 1901 census Ernest Smythe born Brixton was listed as 20 years old  therefore born c1881.  You tell me Sidney was born 1901  which was 20 years later.  Therefore he could easily have been Sidney's father.

In the 1891 census we sent before, Ernest Smythe born Brixton was 9 years old.  This must be the same one -- 10 years earlier, 10 years younger.

Ernest's occupation in 1901 was Compositor.  But perhaps he changed his occupation and became a dentist at a later date?  You told us in your original message that Sidney's father-in-law George James Green was also a Comp.  Could this not be how Sidney and Ethel came to know one another?  It is surely a possibility.

It would be worth obtaining the 1908 birth certificate anyway - not much too lose, and you never know, hopefully it could be the correct one.

Please do let us know how you get on.

Hi Bumble

You may be able to get more info on www.192.com  They have electoral lists on there.  You just have to check.  There may possibly be a small fee to pay.

Hope this helps.

Hi Bumble

I always feel that we cannot afford to leave any stone unturned in this game.  Life is full of surprises, and so especially is genealogy!

All the best.  And we will keep on searching, don't worry.

Hi,
I recieved the birth cert this morning for Sidney William Smythe born 1908 in Portsmouth, not the right one unfortunately, another one to add to the pile.
It's too expensive to keep ordering certs so not sure where to go from here.
Thanks for your help anyway.

Hi Sue

Sorry to hear it was not the right cert.

Have found this marriage in Fulham, March 1897:
Ernest William Smythe and Amelia Ellen Sage.   1a - 439.
Looks like Sidney William's parents.
Fulham is not far from Camberwell.

Birth Sept 1864
Ernest William Smythe
Isle of Wight 2b - 479

So Ernest would have been 33 at the time of his marriage to Amelia.
