HI everyone!  Hope that you will understand  my point that I want to make, because I am french canadian and sometime I have problem to express myself.Anyway, ill do my best to be as clear as I can.
I am glad that I found your group because its interresting to read every posts I try to describe a bit myself and consommation. (I was 19 when I start using and now I am 45 years old). First, I would like to say that I have beein on methadone since 1986  I was so glad that I had the chance to get into that program. I first start when I was living inToronto for about 6 years, this is how I learn how to speak english, then I move back to Montreal  where I am since. Maybe that methadone for some persons  is a crutch, but for me that was my exit because otherwise having tried to stop a good dozen times in hospital, at home, by myself in a detox center but...I always start again. The méthadone is what allowed me to get a normal life and to have the chance to be able to work again  . Before being on this program, I could not work because I never knew if I could get up the next day, by fear of being sick or if I would have the money to get my dose. I am Canadian and I do not understand that USA doctor prescribes the sebutone or nalaxone when most of those who make this treatment have to wait to be sick to take the medication. It does remind me soooo much when I 1st start to TO, they made us do an antagonist test to (supposed) to see how addict you were, so in another way you were fine a minute, then they were injecting you something that I can remember the name, and a minute after you had the worst withdrawl that you never had in your life and all this within 2-3 minutes. It was at the Addiction RESEARCH foundation (ARF) . Then, when I came back to Montreal, they were adjusting you, weekly until I went up to 90 mg a day wich is perfect for me.AND...It was free (paid by the Assurance Maladie).  In Toronto, the most you could get was 50 mg at the most, so depending how much you were using, the program was hard for me, because It wasn'nt enough, so I had a bad temper every morning. So all this to get to the point that it should be the same law in every country and let you choose what program you wish to have...I would like to have your point on all that, because I read so many different opinion about it.  Wow I think that i did manage to explain myself not too bad...I think!
Bye for now  Loulou Alias AnneLafleur 2

Hi LouLou,

I agree with you so much about methadone.  I've been on it for two years now and it saved me.  I started out on 40 mg, went up to 70, stayed at 70 for about a little over a year and then I started detoxing and now I'm down to 42 mg.  I am feeling fine.

I am detoxing really slow.  Maybe one or two mg. per month.  Sometimes I even skip a month.

It's good to hear from you and you explain your point very well!    Keep posting here!

luv,
sue

Hi Lou Lou,

You explained yourself just fine, good job.
Im thrilled methadone has worked for you, like i always say, different strokes for different folks.
My only hope is that some day the US will look at how well the methadone system is working in Europe and Canada and maybe change there mindset.
My Son was a heroin addict and i begged him to look into methadone.
Not one doctor or therapist ever suggested that My son try methadone,  its almost a dirty word with alot of people.
If everyone would just accept it as a life saving med, and the doctors were allowed to treat there patients with it we wouldnt have half the problem with it that people do......
Its the clinic system that is f**ked up here not the methadone.
Im thrilled for you, who knows where you would be right now without methadone,.....
GOOD for you,

Love Karen

My god it sounds like you were used as a lab rat, how AWFUL.
I'm an Aussie and had the same problem in the 90's as you did in regards to finding treatment. It felt like I had to kill some one before any one would believe I had a problem that I could not control.Methadone is available comparitively freely over here, but that means we get to see the more detrimental sides of it.
Understand, I agree - different strokes for different folks, and if you have the strength to make it work YAY, regardless of your choice.
My best friend in the whole world used methadone, then she realised if you did both it was better. Then some brainiac Dr realised what was going on and decided to do a medicated withdrawal. It was in a NICE private hospital, with all the trimmings and technology and it still nearly killed her. She went through the worst hell I have ever witnessed. I used to get incoherant phone calls she couldn't remember making, she ripped her own skin off, her eyes... shiver.
Yes it is one single case. Yes people are informed of the risks of continuing to use when on methadone, and all the OD's we see as a result are due to a choice made by the user.
I think thats where the USA is coming from. If you want to quit, you will. Methadone is just a way to montiter who and how much. They don't see a solution in giving a junkie drugs. It keeps them alive, and moniters them, maybe improves thier outlook, but there isn't much difference between the wo when it comes down to it.
Don't get me wrong, I am not expressing any personal oppinion, just interpretation.
The friend I spoke of quit with the help of naltrixene. Then she started again years later.
Personally, I feel all users both past and presant need to realise it's on them. If your determined to quit you won't let anything stand in your way and will use any help offered, and make it work. Even without help.
I also belive it's not our bodies that need the support. A cushy detox doesn't ensure a positive outcome - I'm proof of that. Not one of the western worlds governments show any real concern for mental health care. How many deaths could they prevent if help was available to the rich and poor before they get desperate or stupid enough to find solace in a habit.

I have been on Methadone for over five years now...IT IS THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME!  I can't understand why someone would say such awful things about it.  If it didn't work for you...fine.  But for all those people out there that it did work for, and who would not be doing as good if they weren't on it...I think that outweighs your bad experience with it.  Like someone said, "Different strokes for different folks".  We are all different.  We all used different, 1 paper/day or an 8ball/day, we all chose different methods to shoot, IV or smoking.  So of course we are all going to chose different ways to recover.  What I am trying to say is I personally think it is a deadly sin to try to talk someone/people out of Methadone treatment just because you have had a bad experience, or even worse, you haven't even tried it and are giving advice about it!

Methadone is the MOST successful treatment for Heroin addiction---Most people who don't do well on methadone are not on an adequate dose---Methadone saved my life & brought sanity & stability into my life---In my opinion methadone should be a last resort if treatment & coucilling don't work--- Just my opinion...

Hi folks my name is Gary, I was on meth four times in my active years and it was the easiet and hardest thing I have ever done (getting on and off). Like many my problem with meth was pills and coke, not right away but after two years or so I needed more so I chose synergistic drugs with my meth even alcohol. I truly believe if it wasn't for the last detox off meth, (IN JAIL) I might still be on meth program, four times on and four times off. It is truly insane to start every day with 90 mils  and expect not to develope a huge tolerance and need more my max dose was 140 mils , shit I used to buy other peoples take homes up to 500 mils every weekend and eat 30 valiums a day and bleeding from both arms from shooting cocaine(even junkies threw me out of there houses, thats where it brought my ass. after years of those escapade my tolerance was never right again, I to this day couldn't get high the way I used to like getting high , shit the doctor told me during bypass heart surgery I tryed to get up twice from operating table they just dosed me again and again till I stayed down been clean now since April 8th  1991 and all those memories are still with me fresh as they just happened. So the bottom line is  addiction is a disease, and it's fatal, and needs to be treated that way ----- but managable, with rigorious determination to stay the course. I actually have a degree in counseling these days but can't stand the beauocracy that treating addiction has created cuz its about money not treatment ----------so I opened recovery living center to treat addicts that want to get and stay clean. It isn't easy but it sure is rewarding to watch someone take full credit for what only they and you can accomplish though some authentic reality concept. The entire process I found to be the driving force in keeping my self clean so ya I am a little selfish when it comes to my recovery.
(Thanks for reading and letting me share my opinions on addiction as I have lived it)---------------Gary P

The book just came out about a week and a half ago.
I vowed that My Son would never be forgotten, Hes on teh front cover.

The Story is in the left hand column of the home page if you want to read it.

I would NOW love to do something but its such a HUGE THING I dont know if I can do it being just one person.
I would love to start the Gino Foundation, a foundation that can help addicts with treatment.
SOOOOOOOOO many of them have NO insurance, NO money, No JOB.
Theres free help out there but its so limited...

I hope you stick around H of H, this is the best site on the internet.

Hi Gary,
Nice to meet you, I am Karen also. When it comes to our recoveries we have to be selfish or we wouldn't make it. It is a good kind of selfishness though.

Glad to hear you opened up a place for addicts, and you are correct it is not about helping the addict in these other places it is about the Almighty $$$$.

I am eventually going to open up a healing center as well but expand it focusing on codependence recovery. Be more of a holistic venue than medical. Drug Free!

Anyway, welcome...

Love and Joy
K
