Yes there is different styles of fans,,,ones I have are...Prayer fan. Smudge fan and Dance fan. They are somewhat alike but different and suited for their purpose. All very sacred and special to me.Someday I plan on getting another to use for special occasion. Will add a picture of one here if I can. Some of mine were made by others and given as gifts...and very cherished,,,hugs annie |

Some old fans were even used in house cleaning. However, most fans have social and spiritual uses .l. Both men and women of most tribes use fans for dancing. Some fans are passed down from one dance leader to the next. Feathers or markings used to decorate the fans can also display a man's leadership status or indicate the family to which he belongs. Fans are also used in medicine ceremonies and purifying rituals. I will try to add a pic of one of mine.....so you can see how easy they are to make....hugs Annie |

Sgi/wado Annie ![](emrose.gif) I was given a goose wing many years ago, I set this in a wooden handle and use it for smudging, but the fans I have seen in pics are so beautiful, I would love to see if I could make one, provided it was ok to do so. Whitehorse |

Question: When you have a feather fan, how do you make sure the feathers stay whole and healthy? I have feathers that grow very thin and even fall apart. Since a very dear friend gave the wing of a beautiful duck to me for smudging I want to make sure I pay due repect and preserve the feathers well. Wado |
