Good questions.    Yes the indians did use the smoke to signal others at a distance.... to let ones know of danger and such  but I dont know if all tribes did this.  thanks  and hugs Annie

Yes this is true but like Annie said not all tribes did this, its was mainly a western tribe way to communicate since there was flat open ground and the signals were easy to see.

I was once told that drum were used by eastern woodland  tribes and conch shells by coastal tribes.
