Hello we have thought about buying a sun conure and a lady called me earlier she her mother bought a handtame baby mitred conure 6 months agao(which is only 6 mo old). Her mother past away over the weekend 11-26-06 and nneding to find a good home to sell her to,  500.00+ cage. Says she is very playful, saying a few words and very cuddly. We had our mind set on a sun for their  affectionability. Can anyone please give any advise. We'd done alot of research on suns but dont know much about the mitred. My wife was wanting a sun for their rep and beautiful colors. Thank you all for your expert advise.........Eddie

If you want a sun you really better get a sun, unless you have room to get the mitred and then very soon get the sun.
I like the looks of the mitred but they certainly aren't the shocking colors of a sun.
We have discussed this many times, about people getting a different bird than the one they really wanted.  Most keep them and love them, but eventually find they really need to get the one they originally wanted.

The price sounds ok to me if the cage is a nice one and not just a small cheapie one.  Mitreds have very very long tails and need lots of turn around room and room beneath them so the tail doesn't get damaged.

If your main priorities are looking for an affectionate bird with lots of personality, I think you'd find that in the Mitred.  They are very playful and interactive, very funny and entertaining.  LOUD, but so are Sun conures.  Unless you are set on a sun conure for the coloration, I'd certainly encourage you to go spend some time with the Mitred.

Years ago I had a mitred - he was not hand fed, but still quite a character.  I have to say though - I wouldn't want to choose between the paint peeling screech of a sun or the window rattling "ack ack" of a mitred.  They can both be extremely noisey and I always encourage people to make sure they are truly up to the noise before getting a conure.  (So often I am offered conures for that reason - their owners can't stand the decible level.)  I have a cockatoo, and still wouldn't be able to handle conure noise!
That having been said - I know there are lots of you out there that LOOOOOOVE your conures - because they really do have fabulous personalitites.
Why don't you visit the mitred and see what you think - maybe it will turn out that he is the bird for you - or maybe it will help you decide to wait a bit for the sun.
  Good luck with your decision!

During my days of doing rescue, I had a number of conures, including a mitred and a sun, because of their noise factor.  Both species, as any other conures, were feisty and friendly and fun and loving.  I thoroughly enjoyed them both and I would be unable to pick between the two.  I'd say that you and your wife are the only two people who can work out this problem as a team.  Good luck.

I've Had Mr Peabody, the Sun Conure since 2000. He's almost 11 and was number 2 of my rescues. I can be almost 1/2 a mile away and him on the deck in his cage. That voice echoes across the bay!
Having said that.... Wouldn't trade him for anything!

I have had a Mitred that I adored and we have had a few really sweet Suns come thru.

I think Mitreds are one of those "perfect parrots" LOL
med size- sturdy
intereactive and funny

BUT I noticed with MY mitered and a few other peoples cherished pet Mitreds that they tend to be a little more "one person birds" than Suns are.

Suns ARE prettier, less volume, and usually enjoy company of many people.

But I am not a Sun fan, which is why they came thru and did not stay. I would take another Mitred in a heartbeat.

LOL I guess the lesson here is don't ask Parrot People for SANE advice! hahahahha

just my .02

I wasn't going to answer this question cause I don't have either.  But I have been around a mitred which was noisy. I have no idea on a Sun but after a day of looking at birds on petfinder my best advice is to make sure you can take the noise of either.  Ones person comfort level on noise is different than another. I commend you on reading up on the bird before you buy but if you could maybe spend time with that type of bird before you purchase it to see if you know what you are getting into. At least noise wise.  But then remember too individual birds are different too.

please do your homework before you buy so he is brought into your home knowing that he won't be given up if he's too noisy, too messy, or whatever other negative things that birds bring to the table.

Sorry guys but after looking at petfinder and seeing all the homeless birds I just had to put my 2cents in.

And that's a good thing.  We can't emphasize the noise factor too much.  People who are forewarned are forearmed.
