i was busying myself waiting for her call and it came and she sounded "nice" at first but then bitingly said "i think i've been a very compassionate doctor, working with you and your very real pain, trying to cut down on the narcotics dependence, but i think it is best if you go elsewhere at this time"

i was shocked. no conversation, no chance to defend my decision to use more meds during this past month that was terrible. she knew from the beginning about the bicycle accident, the coccyx injury...she knew it all. but now she has decided i need to go. i just hung up. i didn't know what to say.

i sat and cried.

then i had a call back from the new york state dept. of human services, re; Hippa: the man almost screamed when i told him i was denied access to my own records yesterday. "NOT ONLY" he said "did she break ny state law, she is in violation of federal law too!"

isn't this great? i have no idea what to do now. i am so scrweed. no doctor, no prescription, any new internist i go to is going to hear HER version of this story, i am so upset i don't know where to turn.

natzo, what happened was while i was at the internists office and asked to view my records, the secretary went and told the doctor i wanted to see them and the doc sent the message back to me, NO, they are HER RECORDS and i can't see them. END OF STORY. i said to the secretary, gee i could have sworn i was protected by law and can see my file when i want to. she said golly gee willikers, i don't know ANYTHING about that!! can you believe it? knowing she was lying, i just remained pleasant....then i called the nystate office of civil rights....and after the doc fired me over the phone, i called her office's nurses' line and left the information i had received...that the doctor had broken both new york state law and federal regulation. and don't you know, later i received a voice message from the same secretary saying "oh gosh, you know i think YOU MAY HAVE MISUNDERSTOOD WHAT I SAID the othe day. ofCOURSE you can see you file...JUST NOT AT THAT TIME because OUR OFFICE IS VERY BUSY and the doctor couldn't have taken the time to assist you with the viewing."

what total GARBAGE. covering their butts is what they are doing. i guess i gave them the upper hand, didn't i? oh well. the other part of her message was that she will send me the form to release my records to ME and then she will do so. too little too late.

do you think i still should pursue action against them?

I suspect she's using this time to "edit" your file and remove any notes she may have made referring to you as a drug addict or something of that nature. She's probably re-dictating pages and having them replaced; I'd bet money on it. Try to get your records in person as soon as possible; don't give her the chance. Bet you meet with massive resistance!

In the meantime...

You really do need to start to keep a pain diary, hon.  Just every day write down what your average pain level is on a one to ten scale.  (One being the least pain and ten being the most pain you've ever had in your life.)

And yes, it's quite all right to vent here.  That's what we're all about.  Vent away.  We're here to listen.  And yes, we understand.

Withdrawal is like the worst case of flu you ever had.  You'll get diarhea and you'll vomit and every mucus membrane in your body will start to shed water at a tremendous rate.  Try to stay hydrated if you can.  Lay in some ginger ale, as that often is the only thing that will stay down, and get ready to just camp near the toilet and the shower.  Oh yeah.  You're right.  The pain will be... not good.

This is the voice of experience here.  I have a morphine pump.  It's malfunctioned a couple of times and put me into withdrawal.  It's pretty miserable, but you will survive, and if you've just been on pain pills it may not even be that bad.  But it won't be any fun.

Hugs and lots of love,

Dan

wow. exactly what i expected it would be like dan. uh, thanks? (smile)i just took one of the two pills i have left .....i already am in considerable pain...and YES, proud to say i made a copy of the pain chart from this website and have started a journal! i just have chronic, 24/7 stabbing jabbing dull sharp spinal pain. end of story. right now, naturally, it is NOT being treated well.

i talked with the doctor on call for my internist who fired me yesterday; he was basically very pompous and useless. started out with "yea yea yeah, i know ALLLLLL about it, i called your doctor and she told me".

great. great beginning for me, right?

he didn't even know the half life of xodol! i had to look it up myself,w hich is neither here nor there, i just needed to know. unfortunately it happens to be 3.8 hours. not a very good situation. i have one pill left. i thought perhaps my doctor would at this point in time allow the early refill, so i called the pharmacy at 8am, when they open. guess what dan? the message i received after punching in my prescription number was "that number does not match anything in our system." wow. can a doctor DO something like that, cancel out a prescription?

i am so freaked out. i don't WANT the worst flu ever!!! i am terrified of withdrawal.

i did figure out yesterday though that going to the ER as a pre-emptive strike, so to speak, is not the right thing to do. nobody there has the time to take my whole freaking history, and be compassionate to my situation. they do ER care. so i WILL have to wait until i am in withdrawal because I DON"T HAVE A DOCTOR NOW...and i certainly can't go out looking for one when in withdrawal now can i? so my internist has me in a corner, out of anger i would imagine. how very sad. must be when i left the message that i now know she broke state laws and federal regulations by refusing to let me see my records.

i am scared.

P.S. dan, i have been told that to go into withdrawal from this drug after being on it for almost 8 years would be very dangerous...that i could die....that i need to do it verrrry slowly. actually i have been tapering off since a year ago....down from the max dose per day to half.....but still....i have regularly been taking that amount and often MORE because , as i have said, i am tolerized to the med......this is so pathetic. I FEEL pathetic.....

I don't usually reply, being to sick too type too much, just usually read all the post, but yours I had too..go to the er and just tell them you are in pain and if they ask what do you usallytake just tell them...give them no more information than asked for, and go in the evening when your doctor is not in her office....then tell your new doctor what you had to do, and dont worry about your old one..
I have never done this, but have been in need of the er while under pain management, I just go when my pain gets too bad....remember a squeaky wheels gets more oil...lol, old southern saying my mom reminds me of all the time.
Good luck and I will be praying for you
Kellye

Call the doctor's office first thing Monday morning and tell them to start copying your chart, if they have not done so already.  Tell them that you will be there at a certain time, you pick out a time that you can be there.  Make it before the end of the day tomorrow.  You need to get your chart ASAP before they change anything in it.  As the others said, she is probably changing entries in it as quickly as she thinks she can.  But if she is re-dictating them, that usually takes a day or two for the transcription team to get them typed and in your chart.  So you need to act fast.  If you can, try to get your chart tomorrow.

I just thought of something else for your pain meds.  Does your city have those "emergency walk-in" clinics or doctors?  Ours does.  I don't know how common that is in parts of the country.  We have these docs that work without appointments and patients are allowed to come without appointments, they are usually patients that might not have a regular doctor and might have had an emergency type issue come up in their life.  You could go to a place like that rather than the ER if you have one of those in your city.  I have never been to New York so I haven't a clue.  (I'm in Texas.)

I'm keeping you in my prayers.

Hi,
I just feel so upset reading your post!
We all know that your Dr is beyond words for doing to you what she did!
However...she is NOT the only Dr in the world that was prescribing pain narcotics...you need and deserve to have pain medication prescribed for your pain issues!
And I personally know of a few Dr's that are specialists in the field of pain management....if you are interested in checking in with them I would be happy to share the info with you....

It makes me sick thinking of YOU sitting there suffering because of your neglegent and ignorant "previous Dr"!

So...my friend if you want me to help you let me know ok?:)

Just email me and I will be happy to provide you with the names and phone numbers of two very well qualified dr's that can help you!

My heart goes out to you!

Katie Rose

oh thank you katie rose. and yes, i will email you after i am here for a bit.

yes, the dr.s idea , her "plan" for me, was to make me taper off all pain meds.....and she had no plan beyond that for me. she just had it stuck in her head that SOMEONE had put me on narcotic pain meds for FIBROMYALGIA, which she referred to as "JUST fibromyalgia".......see, i've been with her for three years; prior to her, i was with another woman doc who closed her practice after the birth of her third child; realized she COULDN"T do it all! when records from that doc's office were transferred to the present one who has fired me, for some reason NONE of the records pertinent to my bout of shoulder surgeries, neck MRIs, visits with the spine specialist, referral to the pain management anesthesiologist, etc, NONE of that was in my records!!!

so i DID ask for an appt. to talk with my doctor who has fired me, well over a year ago, to ask her if she DID have any of that information, like did she ever see an MRI of my cervical spine? answer: no did she know i have DDD and cervical stenosis, bone spurs, nerve impingement, etc: answer: no in retrospect i realize i should have left her practice then: she just sat there with no expression on her face, no response at ALL when i said well, THOSE are the reasons i have been takin narcotic pain meds, NOT fibromyalgia! i swear, her face never changed: she never said "oh, i'm sorry...i didn't even realize that" no admission that she might have been WRONG at all.

but no, i wanted to like her, to believe i had gotten through to her, etc. HA! guess THAT never happened! she then began me on the process of "tapering down" on the dose i was taking. i was fine with that; i tapered down by half: the rheumatologist told me that she didn't think anyone could ask any more of me. the internist just kept rolling her eyes at our subsequent appt.s, which are every three months, to keep an eye on my cholesterol and thyroid....rolling her EYES!!! yup.

sheeeeeessh.

but i DID find out late last night, that the new internist whose office i called two days ago, where the secretary asked the name of my last internist and then i didn't hear back from the office, which the sec'y said i WOULD, in just a few hours...well, she HAS accepted me as a new patient. my fear was that the internist who fired me would tell her things that would make the new doc not want to take me on. granted, i cannot imagine anyone stretching this pain med issue THAT far that they could make another doctor quiver in fear of taking me on!!! lol

so. i now have an INTERVIEW with a new internist, and thanks to all of you here, i will be prepared with what i want to say about pain management, what i want...WHAT I WANT....lol.....yes, i CAN look for what i want in a doctor! and the BEST part of all of this is that this new doc is right around the corner, basically, from where i live!

Kaila,  Tomcat has said it best.  You do have a right to your medical records.  Some office will charge you by the page for these.  Sometimes the best things come in small packages.  Apparently she was not as she said, compassionate.  Now you have the opportunity to find someone who does fit that bill.   Your Internist can update meds prescribed by your pain doctor in the interim for you if you talk with her about this.  Be honest and forthcoming about everything when you talk with your Internist.  I hope things come into shape for you very soon and you can enjoy less frustration over this.  Hugs,  Claire

Hi Kalia, and welcome to the group.  I'm half way done reading all the posts I'm on thread 14 out of 22...lol, so I thought I'd go ahead and reply to your post.

Most of the replies I read so far have already mentioned which I would say the same.  I understand completely you going through the withdrawls they are hellish.  I have went through them before. I found over-the-counter pain relievers relieve the aches and pains, now I'm not saying that the OTC medicine will help the chronic pain, this will help you go through the withdrawl symptom aches & pains, which is a temporary fix until you get your painkillers.  Try Extra Strength Advil, Tylenol, or Motrin, etc.

Since you don't have a doctor right now, going to the emergency room isn't a bad idea because when you get in the ER and you get waited on, and they ask you have a primary physican, tell them that you don't. If they ask you "why" which I don't think the receptionist would...just tell him/her "I had my reasons." Do not volunteer more information than the doctor needs to know you never know it will backfire on you. You'll be appointed a new doctor.  So while this is going on, you'll get a appointment with a new doctor and have your medical records transferred to the new doctor.  Then in the meantime you'll be able to get your hands on your medical records.  Sound like a plan?

I know this because several years ago I was in a similar position to where I didn't have a doctor, so I was appointed one when I was discharged from the ER.

Yes, keep a log on your pain level.  I have back problems myself, a pinched nerve and have crooked spine due to scolosis.

I've read all entries of what all our caring and concerned members replied to your posts, I sure hope and Pray that everything goes a HELL lot better with the new doctor!  My heart goes out to you, Kalia {{{{Hugs}}}}

Please, let us know how things go on your first appointment with the new doctor...I read that you have a appointment set...Bravo!

Hang in there hon, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

Love,
Andrea
