I am looking for any information about my McAteer ancestors.  My grandfather, Joseph, was born and baptised Dec 1885 according to church records.  Only Mother Margaret registered, no father listed.  Other records of his birth date and age (passport, death rec etc) have differing years.
Also his daughter, Margaret known as Maggie, was born (Mother Charlotte nee McMullan) in 1919  The family was living in the Portglenone area of Co Antrim  This girl was left behind in Ireland when the rest of her family emigrated to Australia in 1920s  I am searching for any record of her death and/or marriage.  It is believed she was still alive in 1930 but this has not been proven.
I would be grateful for any help.

I was thinking it might be worth your while contacting present day McAteers, still in the Portglenone area to find out about Margaret, especially since records in 1900s are scarce to come by at the moment.  With this in mind I checked out the telephone directory and found a few still living there:

If you do decide to write, it is a good idea to include your email address.  Many people lead such busy lives that they may not find time to write back to you, but can manage to send an email.

If you decide to follow these through then good luck!! I hope it proves fruitful.

Teri

Hi again
It might be worth while contacting the churches for birth records of Charlotte, Joseph and Margaret.  Bellaghy parish, where Joseph and Charlotte were married have their own website:

For Portglenone there is information on the Diocese of Down and Connor website:

Hi I don't know if this helps, but my great-great-grandfather's sister Sara Cushnaghan (b. in Drummaul, Upper Toome, Randalstown, Antrim on Sept 7 1839) married a Bernard McAteer, date unknown. Sara's sister Rose Cushnaghan (b. abt 1804) married into the McAteer family as well, marrying a John McAteer (b. abt 1800) in Antrim (around Randalstown area).

Ballymena and Randalstown are about 20 miles apart so it's likely there's a connection between my McAteers and yours? I don't have any more than that to go on but I hope that helps you a bit.

Pls keep in mind that any references to them or other relatives of mine that are listed by a 'wrcushing' is different as we don't know this individual (we haven't verified this 'wrcushing' is a relative but he hasn't quite listened and has 'adpoted' it as his tree....go figure), so pls ignore any of my family's listings referring to Canada, that part is untrue and he has inserted them into his trees.

Pls let me know if you have any questions!

Hi to our second McAteer correspondent,
This is for your records:

Date of Marriage 4 May 1879
Groom Name bernard MCATEER
Bride Name sarah CUSHNAHAN
Church Randalstown Roman Catholic Church
Parish Drummaul
Civil District Antrim
County Antrim

I got this record from Emerald Ancestors.

I'm sorry someone else has adopted your tree. It's such a pity when this happens, but it is the risk we take when we place our trees on the web. It also means, too, that the other person has not found his/her roots by linking to another person unrelated to them.

Teri

Hi
Only some remnants of the 1851 census of Ireland remain and one McAteer family from Portglenone is listed in the remnants:

William McAleer   Head of Household
Margaret McAleer  Wife
Margaret, daughter, died 1848
Jane, daughter, aged 6
Eliza, daughter, aged 6

They were living in Finlaystown townland.

Hi Kathleen

Please make sure to always reply to messages ON SITE and not from your e-mail inbox as it takes up a vast amount of space, besides messing up the site.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Hi Kathleen
Thanks for your email.  For tracing your Aunt Maggie, I wondered if there was a local newspaper you could write to so I had a search and found  The Ballymena Times.  There is an online version  here http://www.ballymenatimes.com/yoursay.aspx

It has an expats and ancestors message board.  This might just be the place for a message and who knows what results you might get.
Cheers
Teri
