Hello, I am a new member and wonder if anyone could help me break through a brick wall regarding my gggrandparents, Daniel McGRATH b. c1814 and wife Ellen SCANLAN b. c1823.

According to death certificates, Daniel was born in Limerick, Ellen’s just says Ireland.  Both were Roman Catholic.  No parents mentioned.  They were probably married about 1840 in Limerick.

I know they arrived in South Australia in 1856 on the ‘Fitzjames?SPAN>  Also on board were their son Dennis b. c1841, daughter Margaret b. c1845, Catherine b. c1853, Peter b. 1855.  I presume all born in Limerick but I do not know which counties

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you  Merle

Hello Merle

Limerick is the name of the county you are referring to.  What you will need to find out is the name of the Parish where they married.

I have found these on the Irish Family History Foundation site.

Action Source Surname First Name Year County
Church Marriage McGrath Daniel 1837 Co. Limerick
Church Marriage McGrath Daniel 1838 Co. Limerick
Church Marriage McGrath Daniel 1840 Co. Limerick
Church Marriage McGrath Daniel 1840 Co. Limerick
Church Marriage McGrath Daniel 1843 Co. Limerick
Church Marriage McGrath Daniel 1844 Co. Limerick

Action Source Surname First Name Year County
Church Marriage Scanlon Ellen 1840 Co. Limerick
Church Marriage Scanlon Ellen 1841 Co. Limerick
Church Marriage Scanlan Ellen 1844 Co. Limerick

As you can see, there are two possible marriages of Ellen Scanlon here which match with Daniel:  1840 and 1844.  Hopefully one of them will be yours!  It is free to register as a member, but if you wish to view and print a record their fee is Eur5.00 per record.

Merle - this was the only Dennis and the only Peter McGrath found for the time period.  Again, it does cost Eur5.00 per record to view and print.

There were a lot of Margarets and Catherines, and no way of knowing which is yours.  But you will be able to search the site yourself.

Hope this is helpful.

Marian, thank you very much for your lookups, help and advice.  I will definitely follow up your suggestions.  I now have some idea of how to go further.  Finally, there seems to be a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.

best regards,
Merle

Thank you Marian and Mike.  I really appreciate your ongoing support.  I have joined http://limerick.brsgenealogy.com/ and I will definitely follow up on you suggestions as soon as finances allow.  I have been looking at indexes etc. for over 15 years without finding anything definite.  Bought every relevant document I could find, but did not see anything more than I already knew.  I find it hard to fully comprehend that the walls are finally beginning to crumble.  I will definitey let you know what advice I do get.  The only small question I have is - why do you think Knocklong is the best parish for me to try.  Excuse my query.  It is just that I am not aware of where the parishes are in Limerick.  Thank you both again, Merle

Merle with ref to Knocklong,Its the nearest one to your first message.Ok i could well be wrong. As we cant be sure of exact date.
Parish records are always one or two years out depending on when born.If Dec it would probably have been the next year.
There was only the one record for 1814 ,so it narrowed it down a bit
Hope you see what i mean

Mike

Dear Marian and Mike.  Just an update on my lookups of McGrath/Scanlan marriage on the Limerick Genealogy site.  I hoped if I found that it would tell give me the clues I needed for the birth look-ups.  Went back to 1831, but no luck so far.  Pity I cannot cross-reference the seach engine.  Would save a lot of time and money.  Still, at least it is better than not having anything to go on at all.  I think next time I will stick to Daniel McGrath births starting with Knocklong as you suggested.  Merle
