Does anyone here have theme salons in there area? Like a salon for teens, or salon for sports, or a slaon just for kids? Do they seem busier than other salons, and does anyone here work for them?  Any input would be appreciated! Thanks

I didn't know these salons existed! Are there some in your area? I don't think they would be any busier than salons that cater to everyone. Less busier I would think. Better to expand your clientel in the same salon.

I knew of them where I used to live we had a sportcuts type place, but there is a new salon in my area just for teens. Weird great idea but it caters just to 13-19 year olds. My good friend will be working there, I saw it this weekend it is too cute, all fluffy and boas and glitter like. Very hot, but I worry is it too inclusive to others. I hope she does well but I have a few clients that are young like 14 and 17 they can be finicky, she seems to think it is a great thing. Advertising would be hard, they always want the newest thing, at least my young clients do? I wish her well.

I would say the same thing now that you mention it! Be prepared for your tips being cut down without the parent present. Not that all teenagers won't tip, but at least in my experience they hardly ever do.

Well my friend started today, had one client. A manicure on a girl that wanted nail art then she had to wait for her friends to help her pick it out...thats been my experience with teens they just have a hard time picking out what they like or not. I guess I was slightly confused at that age but nail art? Imagine when she gets her hair done. I feel for my friend.

I feel for your friend too. Imagine when they do have their hair done, and they become busy and appointments overlap? This is going to be a challenge for sure.

Well, I would hate to tell anyone they're not going to make it when they're following their dream. If it were me, I wouldn't have done it that way, but I'm sure the owner had her own reasons for believing this would work. As I would tell anyone just starting a business, I wish her the best of luck. Your friend that works there, the fact that she hasn't had a client all week should be enough of a warning that she probably isn't going to be making money, and if she needs it right away, common sense would tell her this isn't the best place for her right now.

I would never tell someone they aren't going to make it. She just asks me
questions and I try to tell her straight. But I remember what it is like to
sit and wait and sit and wait. I just feel bad. She said she is worried
mainly because it is becoming hard for her to advertise for herself only to
teenagers. I couldn't imagine, I know first hand it is hard to build a
clientele, and then being so limited to who you can and can't do. I really
hope the best but I had to tell her maybe get another job or stick it out
and get a p/t one also. She agreed and is going to stick it out. I hope I
didnot sound like I told her her dream is not good, but that is far from
what I meant when I wrote the last post.

No, I don't think you sounded like you told her she wasn't going to make it. I was taking the point of view of the owner of the salon of wanting to see her dream through. With all the different opinions we had on the subject, I wanted us to see both sides of the coin. Even though it might not be the best place for someone to start out in, it was an interesting origanal idea!

We have salons like this in my area (arizona) we have the chain salon cool cuts 4 kids ( they have little tvs playing cartoons at every station to keep the kids heads still and occupied) then we have the salons that are for little girls and are not chains, then there is the sports clips where men usually go because again, they have tvs at every station playing sports all the time. Now the people that go there love it. the cool cuts 4 kids is raved about by parents and they are always very busy and while the men loved going to sports clips, their wives hated it because they would usually come back with a bad haircut (maybe the barbers/stylists were too busy waatching sports too?) and a couple of those have gone out of business because of it. so its really just up to you and your area. would you benefit from having a theme salon?

Yes we do have a theme salon in Yakima, It is called Monkey Dooz, Specializes in kids cut, colors, parties, peds, and manicures. It is very cute. Each station has a special chair ( airplane, car etc.) And a t.v so the kids can watch while getting a hair cut. The place is absolutely adorable, and I think it does very well. It is for sale, The owner is opening a larger one in Vegas I think!! I have often thought of opening a teenage themed salon. I think they are the ones with the $$$$. What do you think?? Faith
